Yeah, I always thought that for draws they should have a shrugging rook, or two rooks shaking hands, or a rook flashing a "peace" sign...

Feb-24-09  zanshin: GMAN's immediate reply:

<Arno Nickel: Thank you for so many warm regards and comments. It's overwhelming, I never expected! Thanks again for a very interesting game! As I see, your main forum spread over more than 900 pages, a lot of stuff to read and study! I fear, it will take not only days, but weeks to get through. So please, be patient with me. By now, I can tell you, that after the opening I was quite confident to win the game, as I expected you would commit a positional suicide at any time. At the same time I did not want to take any risks, because it would have been a very bad feeling to lose a second time to the world team. This situation may explain some of my moves - like h2-h3. At the very moment I don't know, if after that I really missed a win. You suddenly started to defend very accurately, and all my analysis of lines with forced manouevres led to either drawn or dubious positions. I think, we will go more in detail later on. I was not so much astonished about g6 and Kg7, as this looks quite natural; well, a bit astonished, as Rybka 3, which I expected to be your main tool, does not realize this being the best choice. Kudos to the WORLD TEAM! What I did not expect was how strong that defence was! Perhaps it just shows the potential of this very complicate line with 10...h5!? I often felt, that the position was so extremely difficult that it's nearly impossible for every correspondence chess player to come always to clear and best results within 2-4 days of analysis. Of course, that's the handicap for both sides. I learned that this schedule - some sort of rapid chess - does not fit to my style and to my skills. Honestly speaking, many of my best moves and ideas in other games I only found after weeks of analysis. Then I always felt like someone digging for gold. You have the feeling it must be there, but you cannot see it. In such situations it needs a lot of time until you really "see"... Ok - see you! Of course, it will be very interesting for me to watch your game with Mikhail Umansky. Last not least, warm regards and thanks to Daniel Freeman and his team from Chessgames.com for all their support. Arno>

kirchhoff: Thank you to the team and GMAN for a fascinating experience.
Feb-24-09  whatthefat: Nice work team! Another game to be proud of. My own contributions petered out in the latter part of the game, and I'm very thankful to all those who kept the fire burning.

Thanks also to GMAN of course, as a most worthy and friendly opponent.

Feb-24-09  WhiteRook48: thanks for the game.

Interesting that (according to tablebase) now Ke5 wins faster than Kc7.

Feb-24-09  Ultra: It ended in a draw?!

Who would have thought that?

;)

Feb-24-09  eternaloptimist: <YouRang: <Eurotrash: Alas, no dancing rook.> Yeah, I always thought that for draws they should have a shrugging rook, or two rooks shaking hands, or a rook flashing a "peace" sign...> lol Our team has an impressive record against GMAN. Some people are upset w/ the draw, but a win & a draw against 1 of the best correspondence players in the world is nothing to be ashamed of. Now we can concentrate on possibly our toughest opponent yet...GMMU.

MrMelad: What is the point of playing a game of combined computer's power against a single computer's power? And don't tell me about the 1000 pages of kibitzing because that only proves my point that this game is an utter waste of time.
Feb-25-09  zsoydd: .

congratulations to ccGM Nickel and to the team! draw is the expected result of our current position

in the opening it was by far not clear whether we would ever be able to get an equal game

maybe White could have created more trouble for us with another plan from move 11 on

Feb-25-09  belgradegambit: Hey, I nailed the title of the GOTD! Too bad I couldn't bet chessbucks on it.
Feb-25-09  eightsquare: < thanks to the world team and GMAN for a wonderful game. WE STARTED OFF HORRIBLY BUT ENDED WITH POSITIONAL ADVANTAGE.THANK GOD GMAN COULD NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE EARLY HANDICAP. ANYWAY,NOW LETS CONCENTRATE ON BEATING UMMU. I THINK GMAN WAS UNDER TOO MUCH PRESSURE. NICE GAME.FULL OF WONDERFUL SURPRISES.THANKSAND LETS MEET AGAIN IN THE MATCH AGAINST UMMU. CHEERS, WORLD TEAM, EIGHTSQUARE.>
