JustWoodshifting: team white Thanks <cro777>. I'll take first one, and work it with my engines. I have an older computer, so it will take a while before I can post any results.

By the way, is there a team list anywhere?

Domdaniel: team white Actually, maybe I do have *something* slightly useful -- Yudovich's book 'The Gambit', English version published in Moscow in 1989, has about six pages on the Albin. I can use it to tune myself in before looking for improvements.

I also have a book by Ray Keene on gambits, but, well ... no.

JustWoodshifting: team white Good to have you on the team, <Doomdaniel>. <I wouldn't trust old Fred Reinfeld>. I agree somewhat. The book I was quoting was written in, I think, 1956 or 1957 --- long before computer analysis!

Domdaniel: team white <JustWoodshifting> Yes, Reinfeld is a bit dated now. I have his book on Nimzowitsch, which is full of enthusiasm - it helped to turn me into a Nimzo fan about 30 years ago - but its accuracy leaves something to be desired. I'd guess that's even more true of anything he wrote on openings, especially sharp ones like this.

Yudovich, btw, concentrates on 5.g3 rather than 5.a3. After 5.a3 his main line is 5...Bg4 6.b4 (or 6.Nbd2, which transposes to the 5.Nbd2 line played in a Lasker-Alekhine game).

I suspect this stuff is also dated, but it's useful while I get my bearings.

Of course. He will provide them with deep-ply Rybka analysis. That's another reason why we also need deep-ply (30+) analyses with Houdini. It is necessary for finding the strongest move in certain positions.

Domdaniel: team white <hms> Thanks. I'm still getting my bearings on the Albin, but I like the 5.a3 line. It does seem to have more bite than the older 5.g3, which Yudovich focuses on.

Some of the resulting positions are weirdly similar to an opening idea I 'invented' a few years ago: 1.Nf3 Nc6 2.a3 e5 3.d4 ... which is actually the Scandinavian line of Alekhine's Defence, Reversed, with the very useful a3 thrown in. (Answering 1.Nf3 with 1...Nc6 is an attempt to move-order White, with possible transposition to the Chigorin or to Open games ... I was looking for a novel way of meeting it.)

I found it very good if Black continued with 3...e4, which most did. Then I ran into somebody who played 3...exd4, which basically busts the idea: the resulting Reverse-Alekhine line is one where a3 is useless, as the White Knight goes to b3. I don't think I'll try this again.

But I think it's the reason I get a whiff of deja vu off the Albin with 5.a3. Of course the idea of a prophylactic or expansive a3 is familiar in other lines, like the Petrosian Queen's Indian ... but not usually with pawn chaos in the centre.

Innaresting stuff. But I'm in learning mode here. Thanks for the links.

jepflast: team white Tree update: at the top of the node page there is a link to Instructions. Sorry that it's way too long, but it should be helpful. If there are any veteran Tree users here, I'd like feedback on the Instructions & Guidelines. Let me know if I left anything out and so forth.

In the last Challenge, I didn't really participate other than supplying the Tree. I let <AylerKupp> run the Tree the way he wanted (which was pretty different from what I had in mind) and <kutztown46> help administrate it. Those guys are on the other team, so this time around, I'm trying to institute a few policies that reflect the way I think is the best way to use the Tree. I've always wanted to try this!

To save you veterans from reading the whole document, the changes in policy boils down to these two items:

1. Save the "Candidate" move rating for moves that have not been analyzed yet. That way everyone knows what needs attention.

2. Do not add long lines with no analysis or branches. Just put those lines (computer lines or GM games) into the comment box at the appropriate position, until each move can be given the proper treatment.

Thanks, and happy Tree-ing.

Apr-24-12  karpkasp: team white <team> What do you think about 5. a3 Nge7 6. e3!?

click for larger view

This move scores very well OTB.
Houdini 1.5a gives an edge to white with a novelty on move 7 (to my knowledge):

6... Bg4 (0.25/25)
7. Qb3 N Bxf3 8. gxf3 Nxe5 9. Bg2 N5c6 10. f4 Rb8 : this seems forced.

click for larger view

Here, Houdini plays 11. Nd2 and proposes the following variation: 11... g6 Nf3 Bg7 e4 0-0 Qd3 a5 Bd2 Qd7 b4 Nd8 0-0 Qg4 h3 Qd7 Rfe1 Ra8 c5 Re8 b5 +0.25/25

I like the idea of returning the pawn to develop, obtain a mobile pawn center and attack the Pd4. Black has some problems to develop too.
Do you think it's worth to do deeper analysis ?

  jepflast: team white <karpkasp: <team> What do you think about 5. a3 Nge7 6. e3!? >

I have some work in the Tree on this line. In your particular variation I had 10. Qxb7 etc, not looking good, but f4 may be an improvement. Black can try 8...Qd7. 10...Qc8 and 10...Qd7 are possible too. All in all that is not many branches, so this may be worth exploring.

On the other hand, I still like 3. dxe5 d4 4.Nf3 Nc6 5. a3 Nge7 <6. Nbd2> and try to hold on to the pawn. See the relevant lines on the Tree and compare with the <6. b4> lines.

cro777: team white <6.e3> and <6.Nbd2> are the main alternatives to <6.b4>. They are worth further exploring.

According to Avrukh 6.b4 is the most atraightforward move and in his opinion a critical one. "White has other options such as 6.e3 and 6.Nbd2 but 6.b4 seems to me the most promissing continuation for White." (Avrukh)

AylerKupp: team black ICCF Master Level games (part 1 of 5):

I found 223 Albin Countergambit games in the ICCF Archives from 2005 through Mar-2012. Of these, 59 were longer than 20 moves (eliminating quick draws and forfeits) and players both rated 2000+. 20 of these games involved players both rated 2200+. Statistics as follows:

All games (any game length, all player ratings): 223 games, 111 (49.8%) wins by White, 46 (20.6%) wins by Black, and 66 (29.6%) draws. A much higher ratio of White/Black wins compared with mostly OTB games.

Both players rated 2000+: 59 games, 17 (28.8%) wins by White, 9 (15.3%) wins by Black, and 33 (55.9%) draws. A much better ratio (for us) of White/Black wins. Drawn game % increased as you would expect given the higher level of play.

Both players rated 2200+: 20 games, 6 (30.0%) wins by White, 2 (10.0%) wins by Black, and 12 (60.0%) draws. A reduced ratio (for us) of White/Black wins. Drawn game % increased again as you would expect given the even higher level of play.

Here are the first 4 games longer than 20 moves involving players both rated 2200+. I'll post the rest in subsequent posts. If there's interest, I’ll post those games longer than 20 moves involving players both rated 2000+.
