moronovich: <Karne: Why is it usually the positional player who is the best at short time controls?>

Intuition and pattern recognition works faster than calculation.

Oct-12-15  Sokrates: Fisky and others. I'm not a Norwegian but a Dane understands the language. Kramnik is quoted for saying this to "VG", Berlin:

"Magnus was the obvious favourite to win this. I am not the least surprised. We have trained a bit together before the championship and I knew how strong he was."

Oct-12-15  Sokrates: And huge congrats to Carlsen. He kept a cool head while facing many strong opponents.
Oct-12-15  starry2013: It's a shame he wasn't pushed more, he could win just through draws towards the end.
Oct-13-15  Wavy: Naka should have been here.
Oct-13-15  Pulo y Gata: Fantastic result by Magnus.
Oct-13-15  siggemannen: Impressive by Bocharov too!
Also, some other lower rated players over-performed nicely.

Tabanus: If D Bocharov vs Mamedyarov, 2015 was 0-1, which Chess-Results and the official site have, Bocharov would still be no. 5 with 10 points.

Oct-14-15  positionalgenius: Carlsen continues to impress. I think at this point he's reached Kasparov level of dominance, there is nobody that can take his crown at the moment.

HeMateMe: Kasparov was world champion for 15 years. Let's wait a moment before granting Carlsen equality.
Oct-14-15  Absentee: 15 years ago Carlsen was 10.

alexmagnus: Fischer was World Champion for three years (de-facto for one Planck time, as he didn't play a game after getting the title), yet many praise him as greatest ever :D

Oct-14-15  thegoodanarchist: < alexmagnus: Fischer was World Champion for three years (de-facto for one Planck time, as he didn't play a game after getting the title), yet many praise him as greatest ever :D>

ah, you see what you have done there? You have not specified what.

Greatest ______ ever is too vague. I for one view Fischer as the greatest chess player ever.

The greatest world champion ever? That question is not so interesting to me. There is much more to playing chess than being the world champion.

And in Fischer's era, that "much more" included an East-West Cold War.

There are other factors. What did you do to advance chess in other realms?

There other realms are numerous, such as: playing conditions, prizes, playing formats, drawing attention to chess, inspiring former non-chess players to play, opening innovations, etc. etc. etc.

Oct-14-15  John Abraham: Good job Magnus

perfidious: <HMM: Kasparov was world champion for 15 years. Let's wait a moment before granting Carlsen equality.>

Or three.

Oct-15-15  Al2009: It is very disappointing that Fabiano Caruana did not play neither the blitz nor (much more important!) the rapid world championship, although he performed well in rapid play.

However,I don't think Caruana will become world chess champion, or maybe he will become it, but just for a short time.

If you look carefully, you find that all TRUE world chess champions were also very strong in blitz and rapid play...

Oct-15-15  Absentee: Equality in what respect? The length of their career at the top? Then you're right, we'll have to see in another 15 years. Equality as in how good he is right now? Then future results are irrelevant. They won't change how good Carlsen is today or was 3 years ago (and if you want to nitpick, Carlsen has already distanced the opposition by a wider margin than Kasparov had until much later).

HeMateMe: absolute playing strength can't be defined in chess, only relative strength, against one's peers. One could say that Carlsen in 2015 is good, but not as good as Fischer in 1971-72.

Career length is the key parameter. Fischer didn't have the emotional fortitude to keep it going. Does Carlsen? We'll see.

Oct-16-15  latvalatvian: I can't believe that the Great Anand didn't win this. It's only a matter of time before he surpasses everyone again. Hurray for the Great Anand!

  Sally Simpson: Hi Al2009,

"you find that all TRUE world chess champions were also very strong in blitz and rapid play..."

Yes, I agree but there is one great World Champion who is the exception. (there is always one)

His blitz record is played one and we do not even know the result.

"Yes, I have played a blitz game once. It was on a train, in 1929."

Mikhail Botvinnik.

Oct-17-15  Pedro Fernandez: Kudos for Carlsen winning this very hard Tournament. He is showing why he is the #1 of the planet.
Oct-18-15  thegoodanarchist: Congrats, MC! Way to go, champ!!!!!
