kellmano: The play-off is 'probably around 10-30' according to the official site. Delightfully imprecise. That#s around two hours from now though.

Aug-04-12  Cibator: Jones seems to have blundered his queen ...

kellmano: But has come back. Unbelievable.
Aug-04-12  Cibator: ... but Gordon's just resigned on the 56th move!! Was never able to get the Q out into the open and make it count.

perfidious: Jones' queen plays the major role at d5 in game two, both attacking and keeping Black from getting play against g2.

perfidious: Gordon was well ahead on the clock, but the time advantage has swung to Jones since this semi-open position was converted to more open play. White's 31.Rac1 contains the simple, yet clever point of 31....Rxc1? 32.Qxe6+ and 33.Rxc1 winning.
Aug-04-12  Cibator: Gordon looks like a gone goose in Game 2 .... 2 Ps down; a draw's the most he can hope for here now.

perfidious: Tip o' the cap to Gawain Jones, 2012 British champion!
Aug-04-12  SimonWebbsTiger: indeed <perfidious>

I haven't seen who has been picked for the OL team in Istanbul. I presume Michael and Nigel are 1 and 2. But 3 and 4 + reserve?

perfidious: <Simon> Good question and I haven't thought about it, but I should think it would be McShane (if he can get leave) and Jones, plus Howell.

You mentioned one reserve; Olympiad sides no longer carry two?

Aug-04-12  SimonWebbsTiger: I think it's only one reserve.
Aug-04-12  Everett: Whatever happened to Rowson. Is he done competing?

perfidious: <Everett> Rowson's a Scot, thus ineligible; in any case, he seems to have played only in the NCL over the last several years.

Eyal: According to the official site of the Olympiad (http://register.chessolympiadistanb...), the English team includes Adams (board 1), Jones (board 2), Short (board 3), Howell (board 4) & Nicholas Pert (reserve or "board 5").

Shams: <perfidious> Rowson has won this event thrice before.

perfidious: <Shams> He's ineligible to play Olympiads for England-anyone from a Commonwealth country may play the British Championships. Amongst other non-British players, Kevin Spraggett twice shared first.

Shams: <perfidious> Ahh, I see now, you were speaking of the Olympiad, sorry.

  chessgames.com: British Championships (Playoff) (2012)

Congratulations to Gawain Jones.

Aug-04-12  Everett: <Shams: <perfidious> Ahh, I see now, you were speaking of the Olympiad, sorry.>

Well, I was in fact talking about he British Championship, but I didn't specify that in my post, so my apologies.

Does anyone know if he still plays. Ive really enjoyed his books (though I wouldn't touch the Grunfeld with a 10-footer)

perfidious: <Everett> We're quits: <Shams> made one reasonable assumption and I made another as to your intentions. We're all still here to tell the tale. (Wink, nod)

As mentioned above, I checked out his FIDE card, and the only rated games he's played since summer/fall 2009 are from NCL. No tournament action of any sort.

Aug-04-12  Everett: <perfidious> sorry I missed that post. Thank you kindly!

  Shams: <Everett><[T]hough I wouldn't touch the Grunfeld with a 10-footer>

I'm down to about 4-5 feet of distance after playing through some of Caruana's games. I may even put my hand in the fire one of these days.
