Feb-24-12  Penguincw: Awesome. Thanks <cg>. Note: You can bet on Rd.8 games.

Polish Championship Rd 8: Kempinski-Bartel

Polish Championship Rd 8: Socko-Miton

Polish Championship Rd 8: Wojtaszek-Macieja

Interesting that all the games involve the top 7. Also, top seed Radoslaw Wojtaszek has slim chances of winning.

waustad: I'm glad to see these. This one of the few tournaments going now. Tomorrow the Bundesliga should probably have some games live. http://www.schachbundesliga.de/
Feb-24-12  messachess: I am proposing a new contest in honor of this championship. I call it: The Most Unpronounceable Polish Name By English Speaking People Contest.

The first candidate name is: "Sieciechowicz." Go ahead, try to pronounce it. Now, you may want to enter this contest. First prize is a date with Miss Bydgoszcz 2011. Here's a few pictures:

Feb-24-12  ajile: No Polish openings? What's going on here??
Feb-25-12  masterwojtek: Pronounce this one:

"Blaszczec" or if you prefer with polish letters, which by the way add to the difficulty as they give "new sounds" to the letters try this:

"Błaszczęć"

Feb-25-12  Riverbeast: What does a Polish girl get on her wedding night, that's long and hard?

Her new last name

HeMateMe: Q: How do four Poles please a woman?

A: Three begin foreplay; the fourth reads the instruction book.

Feb-25-12  Penguincw: Leaders Bartel and Macieja both drew their black games today. Entering this round, Miton was half a point back and held Socko to a draw. Wojtaszek and Kempinski both drew, while Moranda lost in the hands of Bulski.

And the unoffical top standings

1.Bartel 6/8
1.Macieja 6/8
3.Miton 5.5/8
4.Bulski 5/8
4.Kempinski 5/8
4.Wojtaszek 5/8

I hope I got that right!

One game remains.

White is up two pawns, and should win. The Endgame Explorer says this is a win 70% of the time.

Endgame Explorer: RNPP vs RN

Feb-25-12  Penguincw: Now white is trying to win the knight. That would be a win 96% of the time, but if the bishop falls as well, it would be just under 80%.
Feb-25-12  Penguincw: It's an epic game all right.

Feb-25-12  kia0708: So Bartel did it again, first winning the Aeroflot Tournament in Russia and now winning the Polish Open. Not bad.

By the way, how old is he ?

Oh, so the tournament is over and he won the tourney in tiebreaks? I don't think so. http://www.2700chess.com/ has 9 rounds played.

BTW: He is 27.

Feb-26-12  jon01: Can anyone find out what's Bartel's live rating at the moment? Isn't he close to 2700 already.
Feb-26-12  King Death: If Bartel's close to 2700, that makes him almost a human being. Who in hell cares if he makes it this tournament or not? He can play and that's what matters. All of this obsessing about 2700 like it really means anything is pointless.
Feb-26-12  polarmis: I think they'll play a tiebreak if Macieja also wins, which looks likely.
Feb-26-12  Penguincw: Bartel and Maiceja did drew their Rd.3 encounter.
M Bartel vs Macieja, 2012

< jon01: Can anyone find out what's Bartel's live rating at the moment? Isn't he close to 2700 already. >

Since it's not there, I guess you have to do it by hand using the http://ratings.fide.com/calculator_.... I probably made some errors along the way, but he gained about 35 points, making his unofficial rating, 2693. That's close.

Feb-26-12  siamesedream: 2012 Polish Chess Champions: WGM Iweta Rajlich and GM Mateusz Bartel.

Congratulations!

Feb-26-12  Penguincw: Congratulations to those two! Bartel is trying to be as successful as Caruana!
Feb-28-12  shogirules: Where are the women's championship games?
Feb-28-12  polarmis: I don't know if they're up at Chessgames, but here's where they are at the official website: http://mp2012.pzszach.pl/node/11
Feb-28-12  shogirules: Thanks! Downloaded and playing ...

waustad: I'm impressed by how young most of these players are. I got back here by looking at Duda games, but several others have been near the top of their age groups too. It looks like Polish chess is on the rise.
Aug-24-12  torrefan: Again. Poland I think had won gold during the early years of the Olympiad.
