Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Vienna (1908)
Held from March 23-April 17, 1908, this and the Prague (1908) event in May-June were jubilee tournaments commemorating the 60th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph. They were probably the two most important tournaments of the year, with player lists that included many of the top players of the time:

Semion Alapin, Johann Nepomuk Berger, Erich Cohn, Oldrich Duras, Paul F Johner, Paul Saladin Leonhardt, Geza Maroczy, Frank James Marshall, Jacques Mieses, Julius Perlis, Richard Reti, Akiba Rubinstein, Georg Salwe, Carl Schlechter, Rudolf Spielmann, Hugo Suechting, Rudolf Swiderski, Savielly Tartakower, Richard Teichmann, Curt von Bardeleben.

Schlechter and Rubinstein started fast with four straight wins, but the latter lost in round 5 and was never able to catch up thereafter. Instead, Maroczy and Duras joined Schlechter in the top group, and though both fell behind in the course of events they were able to finish strong and make up ground on the cruising Schlechter.

offramp: Réti was a 19-year-old but he was annihilated like a non-talented 12-year-old.

Sixteen crushing rapid counterplayless losses and three dishonorable draws....

It makes you want to puke.

Benzol: Sixteen losses would have been hard to bear. It's great that he didn't loose heart and just give up playing. Chess history would have been very different if he had.
Jul-20-14  Karpova: Brilliancy Prizes:

Jury: Hugo Fähndrich and Victor Tietz

1st Brilliancy Prize (300 Kronen): Rubinstein vs Duras, 1908

2nd Brilliancy Prize (200 Kronen): Salwe vs Marshall, 1908

Source: 'Wiener Schachzeitung', July-August 1908, p. 199

Jul-20-14  waustad: Does anybody know if they used some sort of tiebreaks or if they considered it a 3-way tie for first?
Jul-21-14  Karpova: <waustad>

In the final report, no tie-break system is mentioned. The prize money for the first three places was summated, then divided by three and shared among the winners.

The prize money was:

1st-3rd: Duras, Maroczy and Schlechter received (4,000 + 3,500 + 3,000)/3 Kronen, i. e 3,500 Kronen each (there is a mistake as it says 400 Kronen, but this can't be correct).

4th: Rubinstein received 2,000 Kronen

5th: Teichmann received 1,200 Kronen

6th: Spielmann received 800 Kronen

7th and 8th: Perlis and Tartakower shared (600 + 400)/2 Kronen

9th and 10th: Leonhardt, Marshall and Mieses shared 600 Kronen.

The rest got a consolation prize of 100 Kronen each.

TheFocus: Two brilliancy prizes were donated by Baron Albert de Rothschild. The first prize of 300 crowns was awarded to Rubinstein for his victory over Duras; and the second prize of 200 crowns was awarded to Marshall for his victoty over Mieses.
