notyetagm: Could someone please list the best games played in this blitz tournament? Were there any brilliancy prizes?

Thanks

Funny.

Personally I really like Dreev's -two- wins over Kramnik. :-)

kellmano: For novelty value, I'm claiming Ivanchuk vs Leko, 2007
Nov-23-07  KamikazeAttack: <jon01: Bacrot lost 23 out of 38, that must be a bad luck.>

Funny thing Bacrot did well in qualifying for the blitz final.

Nov-23-07  KamikazeAttack: Is it really true that poor nerve is the main reason why Big Chucky has underachieved?

I have always doubted this.

Look at his composure during blitz. He is as calm as a cucumber. Anyone with poor nerves can be excellent in rapid and blitz like Chucky is.

His problem could down to momentary loss of concentration from time to time or at key moments.

Anyone staring into space like for forever wont be with us from time to time, Id have thought.

refutor: i don't think the nerves have more to do with the significance of the event (e.g. linares, world championship qualifier, etc.) rapid events and "world blitz cups" are not as prestigious, hence the nerves are a non-issue

I'm finished with games 1 to 5 already! Wait for my final report in March.

boz: <KamikazeAttack> Back in the 90s someone suggested nerves might be an explanation for Ivanchuk's apparently erratic results. People have just gone on uncritically repeating this opinion as though it were fact.
Nov-23-07  pawnofdeath: Ivanchuk was very solid in this tournament. Anand surely was put in his place. Hopefully this will motivate him that he is a world cup candidate!
Nov-23-07  TIMER: Ivanchuk has already won this World Cup- so maybe he should challenge Topalov 'Topalov vs world (blitz) cup winner Ivanchuk'

-Just kidding, this is a warm up, but I am afraid his chances are slim to win World Cup from 2 game matches 128 players- but I wish he would do it.

To be fair, Ivanchuk deserved to be invited to one of these San Luis/Mexico tournaments- it is a shame he always is having to start from scratch.

Maybe so, but it is also true that he is a nervous individual. From videos on youtube, you can see that he can be physically shaky. Maybe nervous is the wrong word, but there is something about him that is slightly suspect - he is certainly no iceman.

PS. This does not stop me being a big fan

boz: <kellmano> Yes, a strange and beloved chess player.
Nov-23-07  Open Defence: well i dont know if Chuky has any problems with nerves..

I do.. I get very nervous in standard control games.. however in blitz and in cc i have no problem as if i blunder in blitz.. well its only blitz anything may happen... and in cc i have time to calm myself

not that this is the case with Chuky in any way...but good blitz players maybe nervous too.. but maybe they can tell themselves "its only blitz" and calm down ?

boz: I think they should hold one of those living chess matches with human pieces, but this time make it blitz.

Jim Bartle: Now that is funny, boz. Capturing pieces could cause injuries.

boz: <Jim Bartle> Yes, we'd need the Green Bay Packers.
Nov-24-07  hitman84: Ivanchuk played great in this tourney but he got lucky against Anand in the final round. Kamsky was a bit of surprise, I never knew he was such a strong blitz player.

I have to say Grischuk is one helluva blitz player. Some of the endings he handled in time pressure was just awesome.

Here is an instance where an untitled player won an internet blitz tourney ahead of 400 titled players...

Nov-26-07  jorsoltero: hi, 2 questions: what were time controls in this cup? and the rule: if you touch a piece (sorry I'm not sure if piece is the right way to call them) you have to move it, applies in blitz games?! thanks
Nov-26-07  slomarko: time controls was 4 2. if you touch a piece you have to move it unless it is not possible to make a legal move with it.
Nov-27-07  jorsoltero: 4 minutes per each player for the entire game right?! thanks slomarko
Dec-16-07  benjinathan: what is the next big tournament?
Apr-16-08  positionalgenius: So,has anyone gone through all of the games yet?
