acirce: During the era of FIDE's control the champion defended his title once every third year. With the chess world in total chaos it took one year more for Kramnik, just like how it took 5 years for Kasparov between 1995 and 2000. So what? That is not a crime.

Appaz: A WC match is extremly demanding for the participants, so there should be at least three years between them.
Apr-01-05  samikd: <square dance: you're wrong, kasparov and anand were invited. as for ivanchuk, i dont know>

what are you talking about ? Anand and Ivanchuk were BARRED from playing there, because of the contract with Fide !!!!! And Kasparov was not part of the cycle...so he was excluded too.

acirce: However, it was not the fault of Kramnik or the Dortmund organizers that Anand chose to be loyal to FIDE.

As for Kasparov "not part of the cycle", what are you talking about? He received an invitation and turned it down.

Apr-01-05  cade: Is <chessgames.com> going to cover the third event at Monaco, the Kriegspiel tournament?
Apr-01-05  hintza: What?! I thought we had seen Vallejo play Kriegspiel already... :-)

acirce: Do they actually play Kriegspiel?! Or is this another joke? With all the reports about different bizarre things it's getting too weird for me..

http://www.chessbase.com/news/2005/...

Apr-01-05  hintza: <acirce> It looks like they are actually playing Kriegspiel, and it is not a joke!

I particularly liked the caption <Unable to fathom the thoughts of Ivanchuk: Alexei Shirov in his Kriegspiel game>; can anyone ever fathom Vassily's thoughts!?

Kriegspiel is the only chess variant I really enjoy, and some of those games are just hilarious!

Apr-01-05  810609: Sorry gentlemen, but what is Kriegspiel? I tried to watch that games, but I donīt understand anything! :-)
Apr-01-05  WillC21: <810609> You can only see your own pieces. Arbiter makes sure both sides make legal moves.
Apr-01-05  hintza: <810609> I could try to explain it but that would probably be difficult. You can find a brief explaination of Kriegspiel and how it is played here:

http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail....

And there is no need to be sorry for asking! :-)

Apr-01-05  810609: Wow, this looks really mad! Thanks <WillC21> and <Hintza>, now I understand few weird moves in games much better :-)
Apr-01-05  square dance: <During the era of FIDE's control the champion defended his title once every third year. Apr-01-05  PizzatheHut: Is it just me or does Kriegspiel sound like a terrible idea? I read the blurb that said "Bareev beats Anand 2-0 in Kriegspiel" which I thought was very impressive. However, this new variant has quite a bit of luck.

acirce: Since it's not mentioned anywhere else it has to be a joke, although very skilfully carried out with those computer screen shots, games and all.
Apr-01-05  sandyobrien: The font on those computer screenshots is the most awful looking font I've ever seen.
Apr-01-05  DutchDunce: Great call acirce. Also Leko, Svidler, and whoever is behind them are in the same positions AND clothes as in the first round report. It is a ruse.

Awesome closeup of Bareev, however.

Apr-01-05  aw1988: <DutchDunce> I had to make sure, and upon close inspection, he is NOT picking his nose.
Apr-01-05  Dionyseus: I think this so-called "Amber Kriegspiel Chess Tournament" is indeed an April Fools joke. If you go to the Amber website, there's no mention at all of this Kriegspiel event.

And as <Sandyobrien> mentioned, the fonts on those computer screenshots look awful.

Apr-01-05  Sonofabishop84: I thought this Kriegspiel sounded retarded when i read it. No skill involved at all and any amateur 1200 rated player could play a superGM and win against them. Nonsense. Now it's a lame April fools joke attempt by chessbase I see. The question is, what have the boys from chessbase been smoking?
Apr-02-05  Akavall: I liked this (real April fool's) joke a lot better!!
Apr-02-05  Sandmaster: I am serious. These chessbase pranks will ruin the authenticity of all their information.
Apr-02-05  Dionyseus: I'm starting to think that this might not have been an April Fool's joke afterall. If it were, wouldn't they have told us already?

Plus the position shown in the Boris Gelfand photo actually occurs in the Gelfand-Topalov game, it's the position after black's 16th move.

Apr-03-05  DutchDunce: You'd be amazed at what one can do with Photoshop.
