Jul-29-04		acirce: Okay, I can understand why people don't like the early draws, even if it's not that hard to just ignore those, but I don't understand what's wrong with the big majority of the games that were not. To me every super tournament including this is a goldmine of great and interesting chess that you could delve into and admire forever!

If Linares 2005 produces nothing but draws, its site will probably surpass the Kibitzer's Café!> I almost agree, but maybe it will only surpass the Fischer and Carlsen pages. Just imagine all the discussion back and forth of who really won such an event... Add to that the standard personal insults between certain pairs of kibitzers, I'm sure most of you know which ones I'm thinking about.

Nov-05-04		iron maiden: <suenteus> The organizers will almost certainly want someone playing under the Spanish flag, and that will likely be Vallejo Pons, since they chose him over Shirov in 2003. That leaves only one berth left open, and <acirce> said he believed that invitation went out to Kramnik. But he has yet to reply one way or the other. If he declines I hope they ask Morozevich.

Nov-06-04		iron maiden: <PP> I got the list from acirce, so it must be true. :-) I'm excited about seeing both Anand and Adams, in their recent runs of good form, try to carry it over to the absolute elite in opposition. I'm also not too upset that they'll probably have Vallejo back, since his losses will knock the decisive game percentage up considerably.

Nov-06-04		PinkPanther: Hmm...I'm not thrilled about Vallejo. But if he's invited, I hope they use the 7th and final spot for Morozevich. Having both Kramnik and Leko in the tournament (especially one like Linares) absolutely kills any hope for exciting chess.

Nov-06-04		iron maiden: I heard a rumor somewhere that, if Kramnik accepts, they might actually expand the field to eight players and include Kasimdzhanov, which would also be cool. I think it will depend on how well he fares against Kasparov.

Nov-06-04		PinkPanther: The field should be an even number of players anyway, that whole rest day for individual players thing is really quite stupid. Which isn't to say that I want to see Kasimdzhanov take the 8th spot, although I'm sure Adams would love to get his hands on Kasimdzhanov to get some revenge.

Nov-06-04		iron maiden: I can't see why they wouldn't want to include Kasimdzhanov; it would drive up the decisive game rate, and his appearance fee is probably fairly cheap. If he can beat Kasparov in the match he is perfectly deserving of a slot in Linares, and if not, at least Vallejo will have someone to battle with.
