Eric Schiller: Closing ceremony is at 9. It is just approaching 7 here so should be no problem. I will file more reports once I get home. Hopefully I'll look at the games on the planes.

Next year's event will be around the same time, so hopefully some of you will join us!

Feb-01-07  gmgomes: Stalemate! Black scapes!
Feb-01-07  you vs yourself: <jhoro> 72..g5 is a very good move. I didn't even consider it.

Eric Schiller: The top boards have finished and it is time for me to pack up the laptop and get down to the bar to prepare for the closing ceremonies. I'll check in again Saturday when I get back to California. It has been fun bringing you the news and hope that the event continues to grow.

Best regards to all from Ray Keene, who flew in to cover the last round. I wish Lawrence Day could be here as well, but perhaps I'll see him at the Staunton next summer.

I'm not sure who will win the best game prize of 1000 pounds, but will let you know when I get home.

Feb-01-07  Mendrys: Thanks for your time and input Eric. People like you are making these events more accessible to the rest of us.
Feb-01-07  Shajmaty: <Eric Schiller: The top boards have finished and it is time for me to pack up the laptop and get down to the bar [...] It has been fun bringing you the news and hope that the event continues to grow.> It's been really great to have you as a commentator, Eric. Say bye to Manuel also. Cheers!
Feb-01-07  VinnyRoo2002: So who won the tournament? Also, I'd like to thank Eric Schiller for being such a great ambassador to the game. I'm sure his comments have persuaded some people to consider going to next year's tournament. I know it has me thinking. Gibraltar sounds like a beautiful place, and with only one game a day, it sounds like there will be some time for site seeing.
Feb-01-07  RonB52734: <Vinny> <who won?> Vladimir Akopian
Feb-01-07  Mendrys: I know it may seem strange but I enjoy replaying the games of the Amateurs and the "challangers." Sure, the quality is not as good but the games are more like the games that I play on chessbase. The tactics and sacs are not as beautiful as Anand's in Anand vs Ponomariov, 2002 but they are sure easier to wrap your head around!
Feb-01-07  whiskeyrebel: thanks for the entertaining updates and info Mr. Schiller; I showed my Wife pictures of the hotel and she may "force" me in the next couple years to play this event. I hope there are no weird liquor laws on Gibralter.

Feb-01-07  DUS: Thanks BIDMONFA!

Does anyone know the Elo change for GM Akopian? Thanks!

Feb-01-07  mack: <Thanks BIDMONFA!>

First time for everything, eh.

Feb-01-07  Dr.Lecter: What?! Akopian already won? I thought there were 10 rounds in Gibraltar
Feb-01-07  RonB52734: <Dr.Lecter> <10 rounds?> All I can tell you is to look a bit earlier on this page, i.e.:

Feb-02-07  Petrosian63: <Dr. Lecter> Nup, just 9 rounds - Akopian is Champion.

<DUS: Does anyone know the Elo change for GM Akopian? Thanks!>

Akopian has gained 3.8 ELO...

Feb-02-07  RonB52734: <How many points did Akopian score?> +7 -1 =1
Feb-02-07  Dr.Lecter: Was hoping a better performnace from Adams. But, we all have bad tourneys, I guess.
Feb-02-07  the wolf: Same here Dr.Lecter, ended up quite average after a positive start.Look forward to see him play the top GM`s once again will probably bring out the best in him.
Feb-02-07  DUS: <VishyFan> Thanks!
Feb-03-07  argishti: vlad won?? yes!! go vlad go!! finally he does something i expect of him to do!!
Feb-03-07  Pawsome: Speaking of players having bad tournaments, Kevin Spraggett has to have had the worst tournament of his career. He has played in Gibraltar before and has always finished near the top. This year he began the tournament rated 2633, lost in the first round and never regained his equilibrium losing and drawing to players rated as many as 300 and 400 points below him. A stunningly poor performance for a strong GM who is normally very difficult to beat. I hope all is well with him.
