Feb-03-07  Dr.Lecter: And what did he finish with?
Feb-03-07  Dr.Lecter: Kevin, I mean.

strifeknot: Adams finished only one point behind the winner Akopian, that's hardly a bad performance. Five wins in a nine-game tourney isn't shabby. He lost only one game, as did Akopian, and Akopian's defeat came courtesy of a weaker player than the one who beat Adams.

Eric Schiller: <whixkeyrebel> There are weird laws, it seems no liquor can be sold for more than 10 pounds per bottle! I've never seen such low prices (6 pounds for most major brands). Only problem is that you can't carry them on board so you have to pack them, in luggage.

Gibraltar is a shopping heaven for electronics and watches, too. Tell your wife!

Feb-04-07  chessmoron: <EC> Just remainder, feel free to post on <chancho>'s forum for the tournament.
Feb-04-07  whiskeyrebel: Eric Schiller, whoa! it's rare when the liquor laws work in one's favor. If I go I may not want to come back. Incidentally, how high up on the rock do they allow tourists to venture?
Feb-04-07  ughaibu: It's a short walk to the top. Walking round the "other" side is more of a trip and scary in places.

Eric Schiller: The Caleta Hotel is on the East side of the Rock at Catalan Bay, sitting on the water. You can get to the very top by csble car or steep walk. The apes often come down to play. The #4 bus goes downtown to the shopping and entertainment areas.

The hotel has the best restaurant in Gibraltar and a spa. But it was a bit chilly to use the swimming pool or the beach. Google Earth has pretty good images of the hotel.

We are working on next year's event already, trying to figure out where to put extra people as the Masters will probably break 200 and the amateur events are expected to grow.

By the way, drinks at the opening and closing ceremonies are free!

Feb-04-07  argishti: can anyone tell me why there isnt a stinking picture of the winner of this tournement (except the one) on this website: http://chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp...

now this pisses me off.

Feb-04-07  adair10: This will piss you off even more. TWIC did not even list Akopian as a leading player at Gibraltar http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/twi...

Eric Schiller: <Joshka> Korchnoi had a bad tournament, blowing an easy win against Bellin and struggling in many games. He didn't even win the Senior prize cleanly, having to split it.

<adair> Akopian wasn't in advance publicity. He entered late because money was in prizes, not start money. He doesn't usually play without appearance fee. So he seemed to feel it was inappropriate for organizers to use his name. Fair enough, and the organizers weren't upset with him in any way.

Eric Schiller: Remember, this is an open tournament with sections for amateurs (who play in the morning so they can watch the Masters. The hotel sold out this year so if you want to play next year, make sure you enter early. Dates will be about the same (last 2 weeks of January).

Amateur events have two sections, one the first week and one the second, so you can just come for one week. Everything is FIDE rated and with the list going down to 1400 it is easy to get on the rating list. Hopefully next year the Chinese players will remember to get visas on time so they can play.

Feb-04-07  adair10: <Eric Schiller> Sorry, but it wasn' clear to me on what conditions Akopian played. Did he get appearance fee or eventually played for prize money. Not that interested how much he makes, but did not know that players can negotiate appearance money for participating in opens. Do you know if Adams played on similar terms as Akopian? Thanks.

Eric Schiller: <adair> I can't discuss details as conditions are negotiated between organizer and players. He did receive some conditions but not start money. However, he won 10,000 pounds and that's more important.

Feb-09-07  argishti: "Eric Schiller:" wow thats great for akopian eric. thanks for sharing the info. It still sucks his name was not mentioned anywhere. But meh, its life.
Feb-26-07  Dr.Lecter: I remember there was a kibitzer named <real hitman> at the beginning of this forum who went to the masters section in Gibraltar? What became of him?
Feb-26-07  Phoenix: <What became of him?> The monkeys got him.
Oct-11-07  Real Hitman: No! I survived the monkeys :-)
I got a poor tournament :-( but I had a very interesting "tournament" with a very nice female indian player ;-))
