Jul-18-09  eternaloptimist: Gunguly made a very unwise choice to play the French Defense (Winawer Variation) against Shirov. Only 2 people have EVER beaten Shirov playing the black side of the Winawer (to my knowledge). Those 2 players are Burmenko (in 1986) & Timman (in 1996). Shirov's record in the cg database.: +9 -2 =9. Needless to say it's been a LONG time since someone has beaten Shirov w/ the Winawer. A lot of players have the mentality that you should try to draw w/ black against the really strong players & try to win w/ white, but I think you should at least play an opening that you will have a REALISTIC CHANCE to win w/.

Kasputin: Chessbase has all 3 youtube videos on one page, along with some pics, analysis, etc... http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

I have to say that vids (unlike most that show chess in action) really give a sense of the excitement of tournament play (especially the first one) - really wish I could be there. Looks like the organizers have done a fantastic job. Congrats to you!

If you sign into the official site, you can follow the games live.

According to the pairings, Shirov has black against Bluvstein. What can I say? I hope it is great game. A Canadian GM against a fan favourite - I guess I would be happy with any result as long as it is a hard fought and exciting contest.

Perhaps Adams has the best shot to win the tournament. If Shirov and Bluvstein draw and Adams wins (this may be the most likely of all possible outcomes), then Adams is in the driver's seat with one final round to go.

Jul-18-09  eternaloptimist: Actually, for that matter, Shirov has won close to 50% of his games in which he was playing white against the Winawer. Even if Ganguly was playing for a draw, it was a bad choice. Shirov does have the same # of wins as draws against it (in the cg database), but why didn't Ganguly play 1...e5 against him? Shirov excels in sharp positions where he can attack, & you usually end up w/ these positions in the Winawer. 1...e5 w/ a probable Ruy Lopez would have made the game strategical & kept the game more closed & given Ganguly a better chance than by playing a Winawer.

Kasputin: Adams and Porper just drew -at least I think that is what happened. I was watching the game and the 1/2-1/2 came up after white's 16th move. But then black made a reply. Nothing else seems to be happening, so I guess it is a draw.

Anyway, Porper picked the Alekhine. Probably a good choice.

Kasputin: Nice ending to the game that <Gambitor> just posted. It's one of those situations where opponents could both queen passed pawns but the second pawn queened skewers the opponent's king and queen.

Kasputin: According to the official site: "9-way tie for the lead after 8 rounds! GM Mark Bluvshtein CAN, GM Alexei Shirov ESP, IM Edward Porper CAN, GM Michael Adams ENG, GM Surya Ganguly IND, GM Eugene Perelshteyn USA, IM Irina Krush USA, FM Jonathan Tayar CAN & FM Theo Hommeles NED"
Jul-19-09  eternaloptimist: It's good to see 2 American players tied for 1st place in this trnt.. IM Irina Krush is 1 of my favorite players, & she has only lost once in this trnt. (to GM Ganguly). GM Perelshteyn hasn't lost to anyone, but he hasn't won as many games as I thought he would. Although, he keeps improving from trnt. to trnt., & is bound to break through & win another trnt. soon.
Jul-19-09  Micah Hughey: Kasputin,

Yeah, it was me who was doing the relay for the Adams-Porper game on a Monroi device. I was also holding the Monroi device for the Shirov game, and one device bumped the other and suddenly it displayed 1/2-1/2!!!! I didn't know how to fix it, but Zeljka from Monroi fixed it about 5 minutes later. The Adams game went on for many moves, but eventually both games ended in draws.

Watch live tomorrow, 12:00 PM local time, 2:00 PM Eastern, 18:00 GMT.

HeMateMe: at the chess base pages devoted to the Canadien Open, note the groovy characters in the animated still frames.

Doesn't that remind you of the old Charlie's angels photo shots, when they would end a sequence?

Kasputin: Hi <Micah Hughey> - since you can accurately predict outcomes, can you tell me who is going to win today?

I'm kidding of course. Thanks for the explanation.

I think you all did a fantastic job on the tournament!
