I'm not sure, because why did for example Sakaev and Sutovsky play before? (Sutovsky was 2nd and Sakaev 7th).>

Makes sense, doesn't it? 2nd plays 7th, 3rd plays 6th, 4th plays 5th, 1st gets a free one.

TheAlchemist: Right, I was thiking of that but somehow dismissed it. So actually, they are playing the semifinals right now + for the positions 5-7. Okay, so I guess I'm a little slow :-)
Apr-15-07  stanleys: Well the site now is a real mess, but can you imagine what will happen when the 37 players who finished a half point behind start playing :)

  TheAlchemist: Tkachiev-Jakovenko 1-0
Sutovsky-Pavasovic 1/2 (damn :-))

So, I guess the finals will be between Sutovsky and Tkachiev.

Apr-15-07  Troglodyte: It looks like one guy is gonna get chessbucks out the wazoo.
Apr-15-07  Plato: Sutovsky-Sakaev was fantastic ;-)

I predicted after the main event that Tkachiev would be the favorite in the playoffs [unfortunately chessbookie didn't open up bets on it :(] and I still think this is the case, but Sutovsky is an excellent rapid player himself so I think he'll have a better shot than anyone else did. When he's *on*, Sutovsky is a force to be reckoned with.

I've decided to go with my gut -- and my hope! -- and predict a win for Sutovsky over Tkachiev (which I'd consider a minor upset given the time controls). I'm too much of a Sutovsky fan to bet against him now... In any event, this will be exciting.

Apr-15-07  Mameluk: Anybody knows what is going on in Dresden? I only know Laznicka and probably other 7.5 players with best progress or something already advanced to the World cup and there is a play-off for 11 places - better said 11 places for holiday in some warmer place. What happens if Jakovenko and Nisipeanu will advance on rating nobody knows, I guess someone next with high rating who did not qualify should play?!
Apr-15-07  Plato: Tkachiev-Sutovsky (first game) is underway!
Apr-15-07  Plato: ... and Tkachiev has obtained a healthy and lasting advantage already :(

Apr-15-07  Plato: Oh man... Sutovsky's busted. He's gonna have to resign very soon :(

TheAlchemist: Damn, Pavasovic-Jakovenko was a draw. Dusko seemed better throughout, but Jakovenko defended very well.
Apr-15-07  ikalel: Tkachiev is like a blitz/rapid specialist. No wonder why he won.
Apr-15-07  ikalel: Where are you getting the moves fro Alchemist?
Apr-15-07  eXodus: Iljushin-Rodshtein position was a draw...still it ended 1-0 ....

TheAlchemist: Damn, Jakovenko wins the second game. Too bad, 4th place is a great result for Dusko, but it was so close... add to that two 4th places in the European team championships, one lost individual medal in the same competition...
Apr-15-07  percyblakeney: Tkachiev wins.
Apr-15-07  ikalel: Sutovsky resigned after 46.e4. He was a pawn down but could have tried to make something out of this e-pawn. Plus, it was a rapid game :)

notyetagm: Anyone know when the <Russian Club Cup (Team Championship)> takes place this year? Usually it starts at the end of April.
Apr-15-07  TheGladiator: Ok, places 1-7 are decided... So much I can tell from the official pages.

Anyone got a clue what the results of the qualification for the WCC became? From your previous comments, I take it they "chose" one of the alternatives I sketched yesterday - 22 players played to decide which 11 7,5 point finishers would NOT qualify...

But I agree with <Mameluk> - what do they do if any of the 33 qualifiers here also qualify by some other criteria (e.g. rating) which so far haven't been announced anywhere? Will the 11 knocked out players be sorted according to their tie-breaks for potential "extra" places?

So ...

1) Who qualified?

2) Who else will qualify (from Europe) and how?
