EmperorAtahualpa: Trophée Universitaire, this sounds like all the participants in this tournament are students. Is that true?

EmperorAtahualpa: Thanks for the links, <percyblakeney>. Although Sasikiran won this tournament, he still lost 3 points for his ELO. I feel Jan Werle is the true winner of this tournament gaining +7.7 ELO points. Still, it's a shame that he needed 5.5 points to get a GM norm and he he only came in half a point short!

cade: <sasikaran has been brilliant in this tournament> Except that he lost ELO points because his opponents were rated so much lower than him.

I've read things like this before. It must be a flaw in the ELO system: how can you lose points by winning against another player, no matter what his or her rating?

Apr-02-06  Georgie Dubb: <Jim Bartle : how can you lose points by winning against another player, no matter what his or her rating?>

You can’t, but he lost one game and drew 4 out of 9.

who: Though in general ELO only really works if you are playing people rated around the same rating as you. Kasparov could play 100 games against me and win each one and he would gain rating points even though it clearly has no bearing on his skill level.

Well, then to win 4, draw 4, and lose 1 against lower-rated players doesn't sound so "brilliant."

nasmichael: It could be perhaps that the "lower" rated players are stronger than their ratings suggest. Sasikiran had the winning percentage in the tournament--he did what he came to do.
