refutor: has anyone read the "hastings 1895" book? i allegedly am getting it for christmas (grrr...you may notice it's the 30th of december) and was wondering what people thought of it. i've read some online reviews and jeremy silman said as far as tournament books go he puts it right up there with zurich 1953 (my project of 2003)
Dec-31-03  square dance: refutor, speaking of zurich 1953, what makes that such a famous chess book? i always here endless praise but am not sure why.

Benzol: Here's what a strong Grandmaster has to say about the Zurich 1953 tournament book. "Bronstein has frozen one of the truly great tournaments - and thus a particular stage of chess thought - in time. But more than this, by using words rather than variations, he has revealed some of the intimate secrets of Grandmaster play. His comments on the 210 games are more than mere annotations. He elaborates with eloquence and bubbling enthusiasm on the positional concepts that govern play, and a top player's quest to find the correct plan. I cannot recommend it too highly." - Murray Chandler.
Dec-31-03  square dance: <benzol> thank you. i couldn't wait though, i just had to do it. i ordered zurich 1953, my system:21st century edition,(nimzowitch-as if you guys don't know)the game of chess, (tarrasch), and how to reasess your chess by sillman. all of which are highly recomended. <refutor> the zurich 1953 book runs only about $9.00 used and only a little more new on amazon, so if you don't get it that would be a good place to check.
Dec-31-03  ughaibu: Piatigorsky Cup 1966 is another highly recommended one. Most of the games are annotated by both players, I believe. I think there's a Dover edition edited by Kashdan.

Benzol: <square dance> The English translation of Bronstein's original Russian work was called "The Chess Struggle In Practice" and published by Batsford in 1980. It was a fairly large book so I'm wondering if at $ 9.00 (second hand) it actually is the same book. I do hope so. Good luck with it anyway.
Dec-31-03  ughaibu: Benzol: There's a Dover edition.

Benzol: <ughaibu> Thanks, I was unaware of that. Is it the same book as the Batsford one?
Dec-31-03  ughaibu: I haven't seen the Batsford edition but I think Dover's is complete.
