Sneaky: "Peng Zhaoqin" doesn't sound very Dutch to me... =)
Jul-06-03  Bears092: Does "Viktor Korchnoi" sound very French to you?
Jul-06-03  Kenkaku: You mean Swedish I assume. Spassky is the French citizen out of the former Soviet players. There seem to be plenty of exaples of this. Alexei Shirov (Spain) and Sergei Tivaikov (Netherlands) definitely seem to be Russian originally as well.

Sneaky: This is all true, but the funny thing is that Holland is known for its strong chess, right up there with Russia. You'd think the #1 Dutch girl would be a van-something.

lostemperor: You mean Korchnoi moved again from Switzerland to Sweden:).
Jul-07-03  fred lennox: Wasn't it Holland that created an organization to sponsor matches to decide the contender for the world champion and the WC match? For the world was tired of Alekhine ducking worthy contenders. Alekhine gave quacky reasons why this couldn't be. So after his demise the F.I.D.E. was created. Out of the frying pan and lo! into the fire.
Jul-07-03  Kenkaku: Yes, I meant Swiss :P I apologize. I'm not sure how common the Dutch "van" surname is as I believe it is the same thing as the German "von" (baron), denoting that your family was once nobility.
Aug-17-03  niekJ: Actually just about 20 % of the dutch surnames are with "van" or "van de", i think its just a coincidence that a lot of chess players and sportsman are with "van". I live in the Netherlands and not much people in the area are whit van.
Jun-02-15  zanzibar: Was this a RR2? (Double Round Robin)

Then shouldn't 30 games be expected. What happened to the other two?
