Jul-19-04  unsound: Well good for Joe Gallagher. Is he the first to win both British and Swiss championships I wonder?

cu8sfan: <unsound> I don't know previous winners of the British championship but you can check out Switzerland's champions here: http://www.schachbund.ch/turniere/h...
Jul-19-04  unsound: Thanks, <cu8sfan>. I see this is actually the 3rd win for Gallagher, and it looks like he is the only one with that particular combo. The best known previous Swiss Ch. winners I think are Korchnoi, Pelletier, and the venerable Henry Grob (my name applies to his defense).
Jul-21-04  HalfOpenFile: I know Joe is English, but did he marry into Swiss stock or did he just opt to settle and live in Switzerland. Just naturally curious. HOF

cu8sfan: Joe lives in Neuchatel in the French part of Switzerland.
Jul-22-04  iron maiden: Why didn't Korchnoi play? He would have had an excellent shot at winning, especially given how well he's been playing the last couple of months.
Jul-22-04  BiLL RobeRTiE: He was busy playing versus Vallejo, I guess.

cu8sfan: I think Korchnoi hasn't played in the Swiss championship in a long time. He plays more internationally. He's only won that tournament three times in the eighties but he would have been so much better than the rest he should have won ten, twenty times so I guess he participated very rarely.

refutor: korchnoi is actually playing in the quebec open in montréal, quebec, canada currently
Aug-12-04  nikolaas: <unsound> Gallagher won the British championship in 2001 in Scarborough.
