refutor: why can 12 points not be right? he has a performance rating of a little over 100 higher than his rating..over a period of 7 games

percyblakeney: India-Russia in the next round, Morozevich-Anand maybe? Also Spain-USA and Ukraine-Armenia.
Oct-23-04  810609: "Fúúúúúúj!!!" on Slovakia´s team today! It seems to me like they have planned a party for today´s afternoon or something like this... and they started so well...

Eatman: <acirce> thanks for finding my page. :) I searched for my games a few months back and didn't find any. Chessgames must have entered added some in the meantime. About Olympics, I am happy to see Spain doing good. I don't really have much hope for Latvia getting anywhere. Gone are the glory days when Latvia had young Shirov and Shabalov (not to mention Tal, Gipslis and Bagirov who are no longer with us). If I remember correctly, in 1992 Latvia shared 4th.
Oct-23-04  PinkPanther: <refutor>
No, he has a performance rating of 162 points over his actual rating. So by your logic, he should get 16.2 points at this pace, but according to the FIDE ratings change calculator, he won't.
Oct-23-04  kutuzov: Ukraine dominates Bulgaria 31/2-1/2
Go Ukraine!!!!
Oct-23-04  PinkPanther: Exactly to whom is the quote of the day referring?

clocked: Some ratings gainers at this point:

Kosic +18.5 347 over
Vallejo +17.3 231
Meijers +16.4 230
Adams +11.6 162

<PP> why do you KEEP saying the ratings calculator cannot be right?

Oct-23-04  PinkPanther: Because historically I've seen people's ratings change more (for better or worse) than 12 points despite their performance rating being closer to their actual rating than Adams' is right now.

clocked: <PP> "he should get 16.2 points at this pace"

The calculator does not PREDICT how many he WILL get. It calculates how many points he would get NOW.

Oct-23-04  PinkPanther: I know. If you read some of my other posts on the site you'll realize I said "at this pace he'd get that many points".

clocked: Either you do or don't understand the ratings calculations. If you do understand, then why say it cannot be right. I have shown you how to predict the ratings change if he maintains pace. Is this change still lower than you expect?
Oct-24-04  PinkPanther: It just seems incorrect to me, and yes, it does somehow seem lower. Bacrot had a less impressive performance rating in my opinion (at the French Team Championships), he scored a higher percentage but against weaker competition over the course of 11 games, and gained 26.4 points. Now, I understand Adams is starting from a higher rating, but still, I don't believe that accounts for all of the difference in the ratings.
Oct-24-04  milanez: at this pace Valleyo might enter 2700+ club..
btw, how do they calculate tournament perfomance
after averaging opponents ELO, how do they determine the neccesary win% that equals his current ELO

do they add his ELO with opponent ELO,and then his ELO/ by the total x 100 giving the %??? did i get this right or...

clocked: <PP> Starting from a higher rating makes a big difference. Let's say Adams won those same 11 games as Bacrot. He would only get about 19 points, and Kasparov would get about 12.

azaris: Shirov-Onischuk looking interesting. Shirov sacrificed the exchange and has good open lines towards Onischuk's castled king.

percyblakeney: Looks like another good day for Switzerland, winning against Poland. If you win the Olympiad, <cu8sfan>, you'll have to invite everyone for a Beer :)
