karpov!!
Dec-15-04  northbridge: Karpov is a lot better rated than any of the players in this tournament, Istratescu is 2611. So Karpov's win is not such a great surprise. He should have played in the Russian Superfinal.

As for Stefanova she blundered a piece like a beginner and was eliminated by Istratescu who went on to play Karpov in the final game.

Kosteniuk didn't put up much of a fight either loosing both of her games against Kazhgaleyev in less than 30 moves.

acirce: Karpov is vastly overrated with his 2682 but that is of course in standard games. He's better in rapid. So yes, he was probably clearly better than anyone he played against. Lautier is also 2682, how is he (normally) in rapid?
Dec-16-04  SADDAM: karpovs sucks, dumb communist, turned opportunist. Lets not forget what he did to Korchnoi with his team of hypnotics, and radiation experts. Read the book, he should be denounced or made to apologize for his crimes and complicity. Take care

Lol, self-deprecating irony?! ;)

Dec-16-04  shortsight: karpov is certainly better in rapids. he still managed to beat kasparov in 2002 rapids. or maybe kaspy is over-rated in rapids :)
Dec-16-04  Knight13: Why Murtas Kazhgaleyev didn't win? He scored one point more than Karpov.
Dec-16-04  tomh72000: <Knight13> I believe Karpov won die to the knockout format of the tournament. On that note, congratulations to Anatoly! His future is surely in rapid chess.

LOL!

Hey, speaking of crimes and complicity what about Kasparov throwing professional chess in the toilet?

Read Karpov's autobiography then read Kasparov's then you tell me who's the nut job! I once had a discussion with a South American journalist who interviewed Kasparov during a visit to a children's hospital in his city. He didn’t have anything good to say about Kasparov.

I'll take a guy like Karpov any day. I wonder where professional chess would be if he had won one of the three games he lost to Kasparov in their WC matches?
