iron maiden: That's two strong performances in a row for Ivanchuk, counting the Olympiad.
Dec-22-04  siggemannen: was this a blitz tourney because the games looks more like my 5 0 efforts than games by GM's

iron maiden: No, all the games were regular time control, except the rapid playoffs.

Pawsome: Ivanchuk is just a way out in front of his opposition, check out the Berlin Defense he essays against Quezada, for example.
Dec-23-04  Clubfoot: Three strong performances in a row if you count the Euro championships in Turkey. I'd nominate Chuk for player of the year. The Moro-style win with the Black pieces against Moro at the Olympiad was another piece of Chuk-style mimicry, killer beyond killer.

acirce: <No, all the games were regular time control> So they played two such games per day? It's of course possible, just not so common.

iron maiden: It was the 13th to the 21st, right? That'd be nine days for eight games, not counting rapid tie-breaks.

acirce: http://www.jaque.tv/torre04.htm says Ivanchuk beat Nogueiras 2-0 the 17th, Tiviakov 3-1 the 18th, Quezada 2-0 the 19th and Graf 2-0 the 20th. I think they began with a preliminary tournament to decide which ones to join the KO phase together which those who were automatically qualified, or something like that.

Apr-01-05  coffee monster: Hmmmm. Seems like some of these games were classical after all. FIDE has counted 8 of Ivanchuk's games in the April rating list. That means that on the 18th December he played 2 classical and 2 rapid games against Tiviakov. Most odd and I expect very tiring, no wonder Chucky always looks so sleepy.

hintza: <no wonder Chucky always looks so sleepy.> Wow, you may just have solved the mystery of why Ivanchuk spends most of his time with his eyes closed during his games! Well, maybe not *most* of his time, but I have heard he often analyses over-the-board positions in such a way.
