May-22-05  dluvsr1: I think its appropriate that the last person to defeat Kasparov is now emerging as the next great one
May-22-05  OneBadDog: Here's a list of some more potential heroes and/or role models for Anand:

Dan Marino: lots of stats, no Super Bowl Ring

Fran Tarkenton: 3 trips to the Super Bowl, no Super Bowl Ring

Jimmy Connors: never could beat Borg in a match that mattered

Jackie Smith: in the 1979 Super Bowl, he dropped a sure TD for Dallas in the end zone, Pittsburgh won 35-31.

Reggie Miller: 18 year career in the NBA, went to the NBA finals in '98, never won a championship.

Tommy Hearns: won six championships, but ko'd in his two biggest fights against Hagler & Leonard.

May-22-05  square dance: <Reggie Miller: 18 year career in the NBA, went to the NBA finals in '98,> the pacers lost in the conference finals that year to the bulls. that was jordan's last championship year.(pushoff, swish, pose) the pacers made the nba finals in 2000, losing to the lakers in 6 games.

Annie K.: <francescog> M-Tel is going to be an annual event.

From the original announcement at http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... :

"A new tournament is on the horizon, one that is set to challenge the supremacy of Wijk aan Zee, Linares and Dortmund. The M-Tel Masters Super Tournament is part of the ten-year anniversary of the Bulgarian mobile phone company Mobiltel, and is set to take place every year."

May-22-05  me to play: <OneBadDog...Jimmy Connors: never could beat Borg in a match that mattered> Your list was pretty good except for this one. Connors beat Borg in the 1976 and 1978 US Open, and I think any tennis buff would consider those as matches that mattered. ;)
May-22-05  OneBadDog: <squaredance> <me to play> Thanks for the clarifications.
May-22-05  gadfly: Congrats to Topalov on winning Mtel Masters and to <me to play> on his win in <cu8sfan>'s prediction contest. This was the second round in which I did not predict Topalov to win and I had to pay the price. Many thanks to <cu8sfan> and <lostemperor> for their hard work. Overall, a wonderful tournament with a couple of true masterpieces, one completely unfathomable game to remain in the history of chess and several cute blunders, reminding us that humans are playing in the tournament.

Napred Vesko i vse taka i za v byde6te!!!

May-22-05  Dionyseus: <Lostemperor> Using your format, I've calculated that I have 24 points. My predictions posted on May 10 were: 1.Anand 4pts
2.Topalov 4pts
3.Polgar 5pts
4.Adams 4pts
5.Kramnik 5pts
6.Ponomariov 2pts
total=24pts
May-22-05  Montreal1666: again regarding the players rating after M-Tel, on "The Week in Chess" they add a comment to what Chessbase.com was saying regarding the Bundesliga that ties Anand and Topalov to 2788:

from "The Week in Chess":

Anand 2785 -1 2784
Topalov 2778 +10 2788
Leko 2763 2763
Kramnik 2753 -11 2742
Ivanchuk 2739 +12 2751
Adams 2737 -8 2729
Polgar 2732 +3 2735
[These figures don't include the Bundesliga
where Anand should gain 4 points there,
and Svidler (+9) probably enters the Top 7]

May-22-05  Kaspablanca: What about the Atlanta Braves?, 5 trips to World Series and only one crown.
May-22-05  Knight13: Kramnik played bad in this tournament..... Something's wrong with him.

May-22-05  adolff: hi Dionyseus. what are those numbers? just wondering :)
May-22-05  adolff: congratulations to GM Topalov. he's going to be ranked #1 soon, right?
May-22-05  EeEk: Topalov isn't going to be rated #1 for a while. Kasparov will still be #1 on that next list in July. He will be 2nd though, and Anand 3rd.
May-22-05  adolff: thank you, EeEk
May-22-05  csmath: EeEk, any news on the award for the best game on the tournament?

cu8sfan: <Troewa> I did indeed miss your last round predictions. Sorry about that. This gave you another point in the tournament results and also another one in the overall standings. You now have 6 points in 3 tournaments.
May-23-05  francescog: <Annie K.> thanks for the good news ! Francesco
May-23-05  coffee monster: Hey <cu8sfan>, your profile says <Standings after 3 tournaments>, shouldn't it be 4? You're still including Drammen right?
May-23-05  Troewa: <cu8sfan>Nice, thank you.

cu8sfan: <coffee monster> Yes, Drammen still counts, after all, that's how we all got started! Thanks for pointing the mistake out, I just found a bug in my profile auto-update feature. It's fixed now.

radu stancu: I'll chime in and congratulate <cu8sfan> and <lostemperor> for the way they handled the two prediction contests that made this tournament even more interesting for us! :)

Also, congrats to <me to play> for winning what was an impossible to predict tournament for most of us and for keeping <Drawer> at bay!

And let's not forget the man who's leading the overall standings in <cu8sfan's 2005 Tournament Prediction Game>, <acirce>! Keep up the good work! (I'm so far from that first place that it's easy for me not to be envious at all... :))

<cu8sfan>, what's the next tournament which will count for the predictions contest?

cu8sfan: <radu stancu> Thanks. As I've written in my User Profile: cu8sfan, next up is Dortmund, July 08 - 17.
