cade: Not often you see a tournament with such lopsided scores.

cade: I wonder how the match-ups in this tourney were decided. For instance Cubas never played Felgaer or Rodriguez but played vs Milos 3 times! Is the score incomplete or is there an interesting rule for this tournament?

ConLaMismaMano: It was a match; Brazil (GMs Vescovi 2640, Milos 2606 and Leitao 2598) vs. South America (GMs Felgaer-Argentina 2618, Rodriguez-Uruguay 2523 and IM Cubas-Paraguay 2451).

refutor: knockout? that would explain the lopsided scores as well

ConLaMismaMano: Every day each master had to play 2 games; one rapid and the other one with standard time controls.

fxenderby: chessgames.com: the name of the city is São Paulo. and although we are quite used to see it without the curling diacritic on top of the A (which we call "til"), San Pablo hits a bit hard!

EmperorAtahualpa: <fxenderby> Are you sure it was in São Paulo? Perhaps there is also a smaller place named San Pablo? You see, I wouldn't even dare to imagine that the <chessgames.com> webmasters can't tell the difference between San Pablo and São Paulo...:)

fxenderby: well, mario covas, who gives his name to the tournament, was the governor of são paulo. it all happened in the city of Santos, in the state of São Paulo. what to do... (there must be lots of places named san pablo, but probably not in brazil!)

EmperorAtahualpa: Well that seems to make sense....

Sneaky: But I look it up in Google and I find that Mario Covas' name is associated with San Pablo. E.g. <El gobernador de San Pablo, Mario Covas, reforzó las medidas para proteger a su estado...> from http://www.clarin.com/diario/2000/0... So it seems that even Mr. Covas himself is confused ovevr this whole San Pablo / São Paulo issue!

Could it be simply that spanish speaking people call São Paulo by the name "San Pablo" ?

fxenderby: yeah. that's precisely it. spanish people call it são paulo. nevertheless, i don't think any english speaking person would like to see new york called nova iorque just because in some other language, some people call it that way. or maybe i'm just to punctillious (i wonder if i got that right..)

  fxenderby: see that!
