Also the Ukraine has dethroned China who has won the last 4 womens chess Olympiads. Fantastic performance from them. It was noticable that the first 6 seeds filled the first 6 places(not in order). There was one performance that stands out above anybody including the mens Olympiad, and that is by the extremely talented 12 year old Hou Yifan. Could she be the next Judit Polgar! I know that seems a lot to ask, but she seems to be well on the right path, and with so many years infront of her, who knows. All the best for the future to her. |

| Jun-07-06 | | percyblakeney: After many very impressive results lately, the Olympiad was a bit of a disappointment for Kosteniuk. She lost for the first time against Stefanova, in only 27 moves with white. She also lost against Zhukova for the first time, after missing an easy win and later dropping a piece and the game: N Zhukova vs Kosteniuk, 2006
Apart from this she also participated in what may have been the worst game for a long time between players on such a high level: E Repkova vs Kosteniuk, 2006
Compared to Aeroflot Open, where Kosteniuk competed with players like Mamedyarov and finished with a plus score, even with Sargissian and Dreev, the way Kosteniuk played in the Olympiad against much weaker players were unexpected. Hopefully she'll soon play better chess again, and ELO wise she's still a bit over 2530 in spite of the Olympiad. |
