| Jul-15-06 | | Frenchfries: Isn't Agdestein winning now with 'b' and 'e' passed pawns? |
| Jul-15-06 | | percyblakeney: Yep, Agdestein is winning, it's only a question of how many checks Hole want to give before resigning. |
| Jul-15-06 | | Frenchfries: <percyblakeney> Funny! |
| Jul-15-06 | | pebble767: grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....I lost my chessbucks again on Magnus' game! Unpredictable game =( |
| Jul-15-06 | | Frenchfries: What happens now if Agdestein wins? Is there a playoff? |
| Jul-15-06 | | pebble767: I thought since Magnus beat Agdestein that Carlsen should be the winner, but I don't mind seeing them play again. |
| Jul-15-06 | | percyblakeney: Two-match tiebreak within 60 days.
| Jul-15-06 | | percyblakeney: ...and finally Hole resigns, Agdestein wins and catches up with Carlsen in the last round. |
| Jul-15-06 | | Dionyseus: Unfortunate for Carlsen. There's always a next year though. |
| Jul-15-06 | | TIMER: Other players would have played safe for a draw with black in the last round, just to make sure, why risk the championship? |
| Jul-15-06 | | orio24: It is OK, a match with Adgestein is a better experience for Carlsen then other opponents in this championship. |
| Jul-15-06 | | saturn: <Two-match tiebreak within 60 days> So this could take place after Biel? What happens to all those guys with chessbucks on the outcome and especially if they are paying interest to the Loanshark? LOL!! |
| Jul-15-06 | | drnooo: For me, this loss by Carlsen was great; hardly the first wonderful player ever to go for the gusto, a la Tal. It bodes well for him, walking along such a cliff, fearless. It puts him in another class, not just a point grabber. Besides this tourney was a bit of nothing, there are a lot grander adventures beyond this. It seems to me that he sees chess for what it is, like Tal, just a game, and my guess is he had a lot of fun today giving it his best shot. Nor is it the first time I have seen him slip up, he plays over at Playchess and he hardly is flawless in fast chess, though very very good. I still maintain he will be the worlds champ in two more years. |

 | | Bobwhoosta: <Drnoooo> Well said, Carlsen is (probably to the surprise of most people, who expect flawlessness) a kid, and a game is a game. If he wants to be world champion, what he should be focusing on in my estimation is going for the gusto, and what better place to do it than in the last round when your opponent is thirsting for blood (or a point, probably a point). Where are you going to get such dynamic chess in a world that sees players make quick draws in tourneys? Now, I haven't seen the game, and it may be that Carlsen took a position that was drawn and made a loss out of it, but I say go for the point, every time, and don't play chess that isn't your style! Go kid! |
| Jul-15-06 | | EeEk: Well said by drnooo and Bobwhoosta! |
| Jul-15-06 | | EeEk: <saturn> If you consider tiebreak points, then Magnus won. |
| Jul-16-06 | | pebble767: Eventhough Carlsen lost, I still like what he did-- playing to win. There's still inconsistency with him which I consider normal. Great games Magnus! |
| Jul-16-06 | | firebyrd: <EeEk: If you consider tiebreak points, then Magnus won> Which may be important, because it seems that unlike last year (but like two years ago) there will be just two tie-break matches - if they end up 1-1 the tournament tie-breaks will apply and Magnus will win (like Østenstad did 2 years ago). |
| Jul-16-06 | | EeEk: <firebyrd> No way they are going back to the old rules. There was a very good reason they got rid of that, as it proved to be very unfair for the players who finished behind, Magnus in that case in 2004. I do believe they will play with the same rules as last year. |
Jul-16-06
 | | PhilFeeley: I'm also glad Carlsen didn't just play for a quick draw in the last round. It makes for a more exciting tournament. Having said that, take a look at the photos posted on Chessbase today. Someone is very unhappy! |
| Jul-17-06 | | pebble767: Cheer up Magnus... You did great! |
| Jul-17-06 | | firebyrd: <EeEk: No way they are going back to the old rules> Hopefully, not. The tournament site, though, says: <Ved poenglikhet om førsteplassen mellom to soillere ... spilles en to partiers stikkamp med samme betenkningstid som det spilles med i Landsturneringen. Ved fortsatt poenglikhet avgjør kvalitets-beregningen fra NM.> which translates roughly to: "If two players are tied for first place, they will play a two-game match with the same time controls as in the main tournament. If they are still tied, the championship quality tie-breaks will be used." It could be that they have put up an old outdated version of the tournament rules - it wouldn't be the first time a website had errors in it. |
| Jul-17-06 | | percyblakeney: Agdestein did well against lower rated players. He only had to play one opponent with a rating above 2480, and then lost. Carlen played three 2500+ opponents, winning two and drawing one. |
| Jul-17-06 | | Petrosian63: Its good to see Carlsen play without fear as young players do. |
Jul-17-06
 | | egilarne: The tournament site is wrong.
The old rule was changed at the congress of Norges Sjakkforbund the 3rd of July 2005, effictive for the championship that had started the day before, and for all further championships. The old rule showed its unfairness in the match between Carlsen and Østenstad in 2004. Hans Olav Lahlum forwarded a proposal for a change: The last cited sentence (about tie-breaks deciding) should be replaced with: "Ved fortsatt poenglikhet spilles to og to partier med betenkningstiden 30 minutter samt 30 sekunders tilleggstid per utførte trekk, inn til en Norgesmester er kåret." Which means no quality tie-breaks, but two and two rapid games until a winner is decided. The papers from the Congress shows the following:
"Forslag 7 fra Lahlum om stikkamp NM. Forslaget som ble vedtatt, gikk ut på at stikkamp skal spilles med to og to partier, med 25 min. + 10 sek. tilleggstid per trekk, inntil en vinner er kåret. De nye reglene skal også gjelde for Landsturneringen 2005." All this means: Two long games, thereafter two and two rapid games, 25 min + 10 sec, until av winner is decided, as last year. |
