Jul-29-06  doremi: Holy smoke, this Mkrtchian devil won tactically against tactician Hou :-( but it was a good game indeed

Again, how is it possible at all that a woman plays chess like that? Time to demand sex tests for 'women only' chess tournaments!

Jul-30-06  percyblakeney: Lahno-Mkrtchian a 16-move draw today.
Jul-30-06  percyblakeney: Zhu Chen has a comfortable advantage as black against Tatiana Kosintseva and has good chances to catch up with Lahno. Kosintseva-Zhu Chen after 29. ... Ne5:

Jul-30-06  percyblakeney: ...and Zhu Chen won, which leaves her and Lahno at 5.5/7 with two rounds to go.
Jul-30-06  doremi: Hou tried very hard to win against Matveeva, taking rather big risks in the endgame, but it resulted in a mere draw :-( Good game, though!

sapfy: Lahno needs one point in the last two games to grab her second GM norm. She got her first norm almost exactly three years ago.
Jul-31-06  percyblakeney: Looks good for Lahno in today's round, but much worse for Zhu Chen.
Jul-31-06  percyblakeney: Lahno won and Zhu Chen lost. Another very nice win for Mkrtchian, after an exchange sacrifice against Tatiana Kosintseva.
Jul-31-06  doremi: Wow, all games decisive today. Hou outclassed by former World Champion Stefanova, but by the same token, ALL games today were (very exciting and very entertaining!)coffee house games.

Lahno a full point ahead with one round to go, so at least shared first!

keypusher: Some surprising Nimzoindians -- Zhu had white but the opening was an absolute disaster, while Lahno had black and the opening was a dream (for her at least). Cmilyte, who had been playing well of late, winds up in a positional horror against Chiburdanidze -- the sort of position used in beginner's books to show how a knight beats a bishop. Is 1 d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 unsound for White? Would be interesting to hear from a Nimzo expert about these games.

<Another very nice win for Mkrtchian, after an exchange sacrifice against Tatiana Kosintseva.>

She really is a gifted attacker. I never heard of her before this tournament.

Mkrtchian has been steadily improving and seems to be ready to reach 2500. This year turns out better for her than it seemed in January, when she was involved in an almost fatal car accident. She had to spend time in hospital instead of playing Aeroflot Open against among others Mamedyarov and Jobava, but seems to have recovered well.

Aug-01-06  percyblakeney: In the last round Lahno secured the victory with an 11-move draw against Stefanova, Zhu Chen finished second after a 13-move draw, and Nadezhda Kosintseva won over and passed Mkrtchian, taking third place. Lahno's 5 wins and 4 draws in 9 games was a very impressive result, all her opponents were rated higher than 2450.

Aug-01-06  chessmoron: <BIDMONFA> Zhu Chen is not a man, she's a women and she doesn't look like Gata Kamsky. Please change the picture.
Aug-01-06  Ezzy: This is a fantastic return to top form for Lahno who has lost 50 elo points during the last 6 or 7 months, including losing 20 points by finishing last at Corus B tournament in january.

Congratulations to her for winning what is regarded as the strongest womens super tournament.

A great performance!

Aug-02-06  DutchDunce: <moron> Actually, I faintly remember a few years ago, before the Chess Beauty Contest, someone did an informal survey of the hottest chess player. Among the choices were Kosteniuk, Skripchenko, Pokorna, Milliet and Gata. Gata won.

I don't see how that gift might be useful to everyone else except Yifan Hou!

Aug-03-06  percyblakeney: The ChessBase report on the tournament:

http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

Aug-05-06  DutchDunce: <ragh> I agree. While Hou loves her new friend very much, Lahno seems to have just unceremoniously plopped her stuffy thing on the ground. Mkrtchian is visibly trying to distance herself from hers, as though allergic to it. Nadezhda K dumped a bunch of flowers on her would-be companion's head. Tatiana, after such a miserable tourney, appears to be wanting to kick hers.
Aug-05-06  Ragh: <DutchDunce> That was an interesting and funny analysis to prove the point. The organizers want to really impress these chess players so as to make them return to Urals again next year. Conspiracy :)

al wazir: <s4life>: 29. Nc4 does seem called for.
Aug-07-06  Dionyseus: Zhu Chen needs to divorce Mohammad and marry me instead :D

Congrats to Kateryna, very nice result.

The Chinese rising star Hou Yifan will be unstoppable two years from now, you'll see.
