Aug-18-06  tino72: Well he has White's king in the centre, a well positioned (I think) knight at g4, a threatening fianchettoed bishop on b7...but is it enough? Way too difficult for me. Certainly not like any grandmaster draw I've ever seen! I'm guessing they are thinking: "One of us wins, we win outright for sure. If we draw it could be a three-way play-off."

Octavia: <shimmy> what does Parker do? I saw him win the scottish when he was ~ 14. I felt sorry for him, because he was sitting all alone - after such an achievement, it seemed kind of a let down. No wonder he didn't stay in Scotland.
Aug-18-06  Bonol: Parker-Rowson after 21. e5 the game looks equal. Draw predicted.
Aug-18-06  tino72: From a UK newspaper a week last Sunday:

"Parker won the Scottish title aged 18 at his first attempt, including a win against Rowson, 17 at the time. Parker declined a place in the Scotland Olympiad team that year preferring to continue to represent England. He had moved north with his parents to Edinburgh. Parker abandoned full-time chess in favour of a 'proper job' in financial fund management in London, but still found time to secure the grandmaster title. "

Aug-18-06  Bonol: Looks like Rowsons got this one. White got in a right tangle at the time control
Aug-18-06  Bonol: How does Parker stop the black rooks taking control of the 5t rank.
Aug-18-06  Bonol: if Parker plays 41.kd3 then 41...b4 looks promising.
Aug-18-06  Theologue: <Bonol> After 21...e5 I thought black started something interesting, nowhere near a draw. Now it looks like black will win, but it may take a while and can go wrong at any one move.
Aug-18-06  shimmy: <octavia> he is a very successful fund manager in the City.
Aug-18-06  shimmy: Rowson is just winning now, I think.
Aug-18-06  GBKnight: Parker resigned ! Congratulations to Rowson on the hatrick of titles !
Aug-18-06  Theologue: It's over. Well done Rowson!

mack: Bloody hell, against all the odds, Rowson's won it outright again. What bugs me is that in twenty or so years time people will look back at the record books and think that he was some sort of mega-GM, when in fact he's merely a good, youngish GM in a rather mediocre field. For three years running. But however much I hate his guts, I can't take his hat-trick away from him. Fair play.
Aug-18-06  mang00neg: I'm glad to see fighting spirit in the last round.

jamesmaskell: Ah, Chris is off to the Thanet Congress...Ill be there Sunday for the final round. The Thanet Congress this year is a qualifier for next years British Champs... It starts in a minute!
Aug-18-06  GBKnight: <mack> whats your problem with Rowson? I agree he's in a mediocre field, but wasn't Hosgson all those years he won it ?

mack: <whats your problem with Rowson?>

I was wholly unimpressed by his attitude when I was involved in organising a simul a couple of years ago. Nothing to be discussed in a public forum, I'm afraid.

Aug-18-06  doremi: Is the participant Daniel Gormally the one of 'jealousy motivated hanky-panky at the Olympiad' fame?

jamesmaskell: Gormally showed some strong hypomodern strategies against Aronian on the dancefloor, waiting till the right moment then BAM!!! Nimzowitsch would be proud...

In short, Gormally smacked Aronian around a little...

Aug-18-06  DCP23: I don't think it's Nimzowich who would be proud, but rather Blackburne.
Aug-18-06  doremi: <Blackburne> Blackeye?

Octavia: <shimmy> thx! in other words, he's a shark.

So, Jonny won again & in the same style as before - he did badly to begin with...

Great that Keti was 2nd!!!

TheSlid: At least <mack> bases his views on personal experience. See, for instance, the Kramnik, Fischer etc pages by comparison.

The next time I see the said Rowson, I shall make a point of asking him about Morgan Daniels. It may be some time in the future.

Jul-15-07  GBKnight: Is anyone out there getting excited about this year's 'British' - two weeks to go!!
