He lives with his parents in order to be able to support himself. This is quite typical for a 200 ranking in the world. At that age, someone in the UK typically lives separate from the parents, not only supporting himself, but also a family, even if he is a janitor. This will be my last posting on this issue, as I said, you can read disgusting things like this ad nauseum in just about any chess blog on the net. |

Despite the number of chess players worldwide, the media appeal of the game is limited. The top earning sportsmen tend to make more from sponsorship deals and advertising than prize money. This simply won't happen in chess, as the game is too difficult to understand to have true mass market advertising potential. Some players are able to market themselves and generate income from other chess-related activities, which is great, but doesn't address the prize-money issue. National federations need to work harder at fundraising and boost interest in events, but it will never be easy to get more money into chess. |
