jamesmaskell: Hmmm, interesting rating changes. Steady increase for Carlsen, though of course it could have been higher. He got what he needed in this tournament and good for him. Itll be interesting to see how he does against the World Elite in rapid/blind chess next year.

<L13> are you sure you really meant photosynthesis? Id be rather impressed if Moro did live on photosynthesis...

Aug-29-06  L13: <jamesmaskell> I was being metaphorical. But I wouldn't be surprised if he really said something to that effect...

Aug-30-06  doremi: <Everyone means something else with making good living> The 30 year old British GM Gormally got wide press coverage in the Caoili/Aronian/Olympiad 'event' including some details of his living conditions. He lives with his parents in order to be able to support himself. This is quite typical for a 200 ranking in the world.

At that age, someone in the UK typically lives separate from the parents, not only supporting himself, but also a family, even if he is a janitor.

This will be my last posting on this issue, as I said, you can read disgusting things like this ad nauseum in just about any chess blog on the net.

Aug-30-06  cicero1974: <Chess players earn 10 times to 100 times less than in other professional sports> If chess is a professional sport, then it is certainly a minority sport in terms of media coverage. Despite the number of chess players worldwide, the media appeal of the game is limited. The top earning sportsmen tend to make more from sponsorship deals and advertising than prize money. This simply won't happen in chess, as the game is too difficult to understand to have true mass market advertising potential. Some players are able to market themselves and generate income from other chess-related activities, which is great, but doesn't address the prize-money issue. National federations need to work harder at fundraising and boost interest in events, but it will never be easy to get more money into chess.
Aug-30-06  RookFile: I've got a secret to tell you. Chess is a hobby. If you interview somebody like Bent Larsen, and ask him if he would do it all over again, would he spend his life playing chess: the answer is: no.

Aug-30-06  RookFile: Suenteus: If you read my whole entry, it should be clear that I understand that for some, chess is their life. Now that we're on common ground, we can proceed to the point: such a life is wasted. A player such as Emanuel Lasker made this point: you don't spend your whole life playing only chess, because chess is simply not important enough.

And I do agree. It's the basis of my book to some extent.
Aug-30-06  RookFile: What book is that?

suenteus po 147: <Rookfile> It's a book of fiction I'm close to finishing. It's about the life of a chess prodigy who returns to professional play after years of involuntary retirement.
