  Wild Bill: Some results today:

Involving the four players with 3 points each:

Williams ½-½ Gagunashvili
Gofshtein ½-½ Cherniaev

Involving palyers with 2½ points each:

Tahihov 0-1 Ansell
Vul 0-1 Pavlovic
Pert ½-½ Rendle

Games with results unreported involving players with 2½ points:

Greet - Houska
Jones - Eames (2 points)

It's getting crowded at the top after four rounds.

Dec-31-06  GBKnight: Williams-Gagunashvili was an interesting game - a sacrificial attack from williams which eventually ended in perpetual check. Worth a look when its uploaded, or you could link here : http://www.hastingschess.org.uk/gam...

euripides: <GB> I looked after you posted and thought Williams was winning a masterpiece. I was surprised it ended in a perpetual.

Captain Scarlet: a great shame for Williams. He played superbly for 3/4 of the game and then blew it. He can't quite make it to GM status - maybe this game illustrates why.

luzhin: Can anyone recall a Hastings Congress more lamentable than this one? Not a single young player of interest-- indeed scarcely a single interesting player of any age. And most of the games posted on this site are dross, not worthy of a tournament with such a tremendous history. If this is the best that the British Chess Federation can provide then the future of the game in the UK is bleak.
Jan-01-07  NimzoKing: What about N.Pert?
Jan-01-07  GBKnight: Indeed the future is bleak, but lets give credit to the Hastings organisers for not letting this tournament disappear completely. How long did the great GLC tournaments of the 1980s last for? The Lloyds Bank Masters? All those huge London congresses of the 1970s/80s? The Folkestone Easter Congress ? All long gone. The ECF do not organise it by the way.

KKDEREK: <Flo Mountier destroys Neil Peart.> Agreed. And Art Blakey destroys everybody. Imagine a match btw Fischer X Art Blakey !!
Jan-03-07  wasspwot: You say <Luzhin> that there are no interesting young players but there is Ryan Rhys-Griffiths from Ireland who is young: apparently only took up the game at Christmas 2004 and is now rated 2100. I played a tournament in Dublin with him this time last year when he was rated 1400 or so, so thats an incredible rate of progress.

Karpova: Ikonnikov won with the black pieces today. The endgame was quite interesting with his opponent - Hendriks (2439) being in time trouble. Gagunashvili won against Gofshtein today.

Then you obviously haven't heard Virgil Donati. ;-)

John Saunders: No interesting young players, eh? How about Srinath Narayanan, world under-12 champion. 5½/9, TPR of 2448. Beat a GM (admittedly a genuinely ailing one). Not bad for a pre-teen.
Jan-08-07  Shajmaty: Gagunashvili-Pert, draw after 3; Cherniaev-Ikonnikov, draw after 11; Gofshtein-Pavlovic, draw after 10... too many short draws in the ninth (and last) round! The only win at the top tables, by Neverov, who shared first with Gagunashvili. Disappointing performance by Mark Hebden: +3 =5 -1.
Jan-08-07  Shajmaty: Even worst by Farhad Tahirov, seeded number 4, with +2 =3 -2... and who left Hastings after 7 rounds.

John Saunders: Farhad Tahirov was genuinely ill for several rounds before he withdrew, and his medication was making him sleepy.
Jan-09-07  Shajmaty: <John Saunders: Farhad Tahirov was genuinely ill for several rounds before he withdrew, and his medication was making him sleepy.> Thanks for the info, John. I was not aware of this fact!
Jul-22-07  bettermove: What is going on with this game:
Gagunashvili-Pert, draw after 3 moves!??

This is poor IMHO- was there a valid reason for this? Otherwise top class chess is up for ridicule if short agreed draws materialize like this! Whatever the reason perhaps in a top competition the rules should be changed to say no agreed draws within 25 moves -so PLAY!
