May-26-07  savagerules: What a weak tournament to honor Capablanca, they should call it the Ricky Ricardo Memorial Tournament instead.

technical draw: "You have some splaining to do Lucy, uh, savagerules"...
May-26-07  IMDONE4: Ivanchuk's competition in this tournament wasn't weak; Most players were rated in the mid to high 2600s. Anyways, congrats Ivanchuk on winning the tourney.

Caissanist: I believe that the tournament still has two rounds to go.

ganso: Looks like Dominguez and Ivanchuk played a 15 move draw in round 6 or so. Dominguez earlier played an even shorter draw with Bruzon. No comprendo, given Dominguez's mediocre results in tournament. I guess he's given up and is happy with a +1 (but he shouldn't be!).
May-26-07  Dr.Lecter: <keypusher> OMG! You're driving me crazy. OK. Let me clarify. I think Anand is a real good player and has a chance in winning any tourney, just as much as Topa or Vlad. BUT, I think he might be becoming too old to participate in big tournaments in 2-3 years. Ivanchuk, an exception, because he seems to have nervous problems or something, and maybe, just maybe, can't concentrate as much as other players. Possible explanation: Age.

Hope I was clear this time around

Round 8, champion Vassily Ivanchuk 6'5 points

May-27-07  percyblakeney: After Ivanchuk's win in round 8 he has won the tournament with one round to go and will at the moment gain around a dozen points.
May-27-07  Mameluk: Ivanchuk gains some points from here, bundesliga and russian liga. What can be his next rating? My experienced guess is around 2755, which may not be enough for top 5 but pretty close to No. 2.

Wolfgang01: What's more interesting to me: Why does Vassily Ivanchuk not play with the candidates tournament? There are at last two to four players obviously with a lower rating than his. Vassily will also have his reasons.
May-28-07  Karpova: <Wolfgang01>
Yes, he has a reason - he did not qualify. Here's an article about the qualification process: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

<If you are Vassily Ivanchuk, then you probably bitterly regret not being rated one point higher on either the July 2004 or January 2005 rating lists, because that would have been enough to move you ahead of Bacrot on the “reserve” rating list. Instead, you had to finish in the top ten at Khanty-Mansyisk (not counting Shirov or Bacrot). Since you were knocked out early, your best bet at this point is probably for either Kasimjanov, Leko, Adams, Polgar, Shirov, or Bacrot to go on paternity/maternity leave and withdraw from the matches, in which case you would take their place based on your rating (as long as Kasparov and Kramnik do both decline to play).>

May-28-07  khan2003: the selection for the candidates tournament is not perfect at all. For example, Radjabov, Mamedyarov and Ivanchuk are much stronger than the majority of "candidates"...
May-28-07  khan2003: as far as the Capablanca memorial participants is concerned - Vugar Gashimov might actually challenge Ivanchuk had he be more aggressive in the number of his games here. V.Gashimov is pretty strong GM, a bit unstable sometimes, but far more talented than Miton, Dominguez or Bruzon.

May-29-07  percyblakeney: Another win for Ivanchuk in the last round, and he ended up with +6 -0 =3, winning with a two point margin.
May-29-07  percyblakeney: Together with points gained in other competitions Ivanchuk should reach his highest rating ever on the next FIDE list.
May-29-07  anandrulez: Whats the expected rating friends ? brilliant vassilya is playin well - he is one of my favourite players too .
May-29-07  Knight13: How many rounds are there!?
May-29-07  Karpova: <Knight13: How many rounds are there!?>

Nine rounds, of course. Pretty easy to find out.

Ivanchuk won with 7.5/9

May-29-07  marca: According to Fide's calculator, Ivanchuk should gain 14.7 pts from the Capablanca (Rc:2604, W-7.5, N-9, Ro-2729, K - 10) , 8.7 pts from the Russian liga (Rc:2681, W-6, N-9, Ro-2729, K - 10), and 8.6 pts from the Bundesliga (Rc:2626, W-3.5, N-4, Ro-2741, K - 10).
May-29-07  Knight13: <Karpova> Thanks.

Congratulations IVANCHUK! YEAH!

May-30-07  malthrope: Congrats Chuky! Gosh you played some mean games of chess in Havana! :-) Thanks also to <marca> & <percyblakeney> for the rating updates and adjustments... His new rating looks to be 2761 (his previous published best was 2752 in the FIDE July '05 published list). ;-) - Mal
May-30-07  Knight13: Okay cool Ivanchuk's gonna be back up to 2750.
Sep-19-08  Xeroxx: Ivanchuk won.
