Jun-02-07    seaotter: the typical plan for White is to play g3 and Bg2 and Nh4,... the Nh4 move stops silliness of Bf5 and h7-h5-h4,.. also by fianchettoing the white squared Bishop it aims at d5,... White uses this move to break open the center and expose the King even at the cost of a center pawn... Finally, the attack that Black has down the g-file is nullified because of the configuration of g3/Nh4. I thought the Bronstein-Larsen was pretty much discarded at top levels.> The game is now over, so we know that Ponomariov's strategy did not succeed, but it was probably exactly the fact that the Bronstein-Larsen is out-of-fashion that the commentators liked. Their and Ponomariov's thinking was probably that the likely unfamiliarity of the defense to Rublevsky (in comparison with other defences Ponomariov could have played) would have increased the possibility that he would have gone wrong.
