May-26-07  Bobak Zahmat: It's hard to predict who will prevail in this battle. Their strenght should be about equal. But I think Gelfand's determination to prove himself gives him the edge.

ahmadov: <Bobak Zahmat> I actually believe that Gelfand will easily crush Kasim...

SwitchingQuylthulg: I also guess Gelfand will win, but I don't find it all clear... Kasimdzhanov has proved on several occasions that he can reach good results against the very top. I don't think the win of 2004 was just sheer luck; at his best, Kasimdzhanov is a Tomi Nybäck type of player who scores 60% against pretty much anyone, thus very well suited for match play. However I don't think Kasim <is> at his best right now...
May-26-07  Avarus: What a matchup it would be to see Kasim in mexico, he is one of those that are called "world champions" and could just have what it takes to show the chessworld he deserved it back then.

strifeknot: This is the toughest match to call, I think. Gelfand is the more consistent player, but Kasim at his best can take him.
May-26-07  percyblakeney: I'm betting on Gelfand here, but he'd better decide it before the rapid tiebreak... Kasim has played a couple of times in Corus without reaching the top ten and finished last in Linares the one time he was invited. Gelfand should be the better player but in short matches anything can happen.
May-26-07  square dance: im not sure that this is such a tough match to call. no doubt that kasim has a fair chance here, but gelfand must be the clear favorite.
May-26-07  DCP23: <strifeknot: This is the toughest match to call, I think.>

Politely disagreed. Adams-Shirov is the toughest to call. Gelfand-Kazimjanov would have been tough to call had it been a rapid match. But in classical, Gelfand will crush Kazim.

May-26-07  lmreith: i think Kasim has the edge here and will win; whenever it is really important he is capable of beating nearly everybody in the world (remeber his WC-Title where he defeated Adams and Topa, or his win against Anand in St.Luis)
May-26-07  lmreith: <DCP23> i dont agree on the point of rapid-chess; i would consider kasim also as heyvy favorite, regarding his last performances (Korsika)

Appaz: Gelfand is stronger in classical match play, so I guess Kazim will go for the rapids.
May-26-07  chess61: I agree with <strifeknot>. This is the toughest match to call. IMHO, Adams will beat Shirov simply because he is more consistent than Shirov.

refutor: <chess61> what does consistency have to do with a 6 game match?
May-26-07  Knight13: So that 2650 guy is still in this thing with the other 2700s, huh. Oh well he won't win.
May-26-07  babakova: I think this match will bring some sharp openings and overall interesting games.
May-26-07  chess61: <refutor: what does consistency have to do with a 6 game match?>

Maybe you are right. It is a short match. But, you know, Shirov (though one of the most creative players around) can at times be in really bad form.

May-26-07  protean: Gelfand will be well-prepared, but I'm gonna go for Kasimdzhanov - the proven match-player. As has been pointed out, he's a good rapid player and I also get the feeling that Boris isn't particularly headstrong and so is more likely to succumb to pressure.
May-26-07  s4life: Gelfand is a much more solid player... in matches that will make a huge difference. He's the heavy favorite in my book.
May-26-07  stanleys: Slight advantage for Gelfand, because of his experience and excellent preparation, but nobody could forget what Kasim did in 2004
May-26-07  protean: <<s4life> Gelfand is a much more solid player... in matches that will make a huge difference.> I personally don't think this is important for such a short match. And as I have said on another page, it is surely mental solidity that counts in matchplay and I think this attribute is best seen in Kasimdzhanov. But we shall see. :-)

ketchuplover: Kasim wins the armaggedon game.
May-26-07  positionalgenius: Kasim wins barely. Gelfand is a strong player.
