 | | micartouse: Leko is through! He dominated his two opponents. |
| Jun-11-07 | | ReikiMaster: Leko wins the match 3.5 - 1.5
Very impressive! Unexpected supremacy over two top notch opponents. |
| Jun-11-07 | | arunjangity: bye bye bari
polgar must be grinning now. she wore down bareev to the point where he had no more fight left in him |

 | | Hesam7: <Peligroso Patzer: <Hesam7: Why is Mig trashing Bareev constantly?>
<twinlark: Mig considers a 19-move draw offer in a must-win situation like this when there is still plenty of play in the position to be a little gormless.> I agree that such rapid capitulation is more deserving of criticism than the habit of some players (e.g., Kamsky) of playing out objectively hopeless endgames (as he will probably do today).> What kind of rapid capitulation?? Bareev is 42 years old (oldest in the field of 16) he was an underdog even in his match with Polgar despite this he won the first match very convincingly. Then he starts the match with Leko and misses a win in the first game with Black and loses. He loses game 3. In game 4 after pushing very hard for a win but he achieved a draw I think he gave up yesterday not today. Considering his age and the fact that he looked tired even at the end of his first match these two matches were quite a success. |

I just think he should not have agreed the draw so early in today's game. I have more admiration for a player who fights on in a difficult-to-hopeless position, even if some kibitzers perceive it as a lack of sportsmanship. |

 | | Marmot PFL: This seemed to be the only match where both players bothered to dress for the occasion. Shirov wore a t-shirt, Grischuk was in jeans, and Kamsky even wore a baseball cap turned backwards (very low class). |
| Jun-11-07 | | Swapmeet: Yuck. |

So Kamsky still dressed for the occasion (regarding his preparation, etc.) |
| Jun-11-07 | | Knight13: And there goes Bareev... |
| Jun-11-07 | | MrPatzer: I seems that Bareev was already psychologically defeated even before game five began. |

 | | acirce: What is "dressed for the occasion" supposed to mean? It's a game of chess. Why wouldn't you wear what you feel comfortable in? I would hate to play in some stupid suit and tie. |
| Jun-11-07 | | Towershield: acirce needs a new avatar. |
| Jun-11-07 | | Rubion: Yes let them wear what they want I say. Kamsky does look pretty absurd in his cap though ... |

 | | Marmot PFL: <acirce> If you are an amateur playing for yourself that is fine, but a pro (who the public pays to watch) should look, well, professional. Maybe they think it's only Siberia, not Moscow or Leningrad, so it doesn't matter, but I think Fischer (and Spassky too) showed that dressing better was good for the image of chess (before he went completely bonkers at least). |

| Jun-11-07 | | AVA: The fact that someone as pathetic as Bareev made it this far in a world championship qualifier is horrific. I have no respect for someone who needs 2 wins in a match, and offers his opponent a draw on move 19!!! Its bad enough he plays his caro which he has lost with already, but to offer a draw and in essence eliminate yourself is ridiculous. Its sad that people like bareev get through and we lose talent and excitement with players like Carlsen having to face Aronian in the 1st round. |

 | | JointheArmy: How many points does Leko gain overall from Elista? |
| Jun-11-07 | | chessmoron: +13 2738+13=2751
+9.4 for Gurevich and +3.5 from Bareev. |
| Jun-11-07 | | Resignation Trap: Bareev missed his opportunity in game one of this match. After that, he didn't even seem to try to win. Does anybody else share this impression with me? |
| Jun-11-07 | | Kain3: +5 -0 =4 in nine candidate matches, now that is really impressive. And I don't agree that Gurevich and Bareev were that "easy" opponents. I still consider Evgeny a strong player, a lot better than what his current rating shows. He was #4 a few years ago and a constant top20 for years, and he played better in the candidates than some of the other players. |
| Jun-12-07 | | arunjangity: <tigran petrosian> i did not notice it early in the match, but he clearly lost his courage somewhere. i thought he was just tired from the first match. instead, perhaps he can not stand the prospect of trying and failing, and have to admit that his best is not good enough. so he doesn't try at all. (homer simpson: you tried your best, and you failed miserably. the lesson is, never try) |

 | | Caissanist: <Resignation Trap> Yes, that was my impression too--he seemed to be very tired, either physically or psychologically. |

But do you have anything that looks like a solution? Selecting players by playing style instead of strength or match performance is likely to meet, ehm, practical problems. So...? |
| Jun-13-07 | | kingsindian2006: why do chess players use the excuse of being tired????? do professional basketball players complain of being tired after the first or second round? .. they are professionals , they train not to be tired.. excuses are like @#$%*@!s, everyone has one |
| Nov-23-07 | | Cactus: I find <AVA>'s rant to be quite annoying.'Oh, you beat Polgar, but she's more popular, so she should go on to the next round. Sorry.' As a Bareev fan, he deserves to be in this as much as Polgar. He's 42, and playing of the top five players of our time; what do you expect? |
