And we must be equally impressed with Chuky, making another stellar performance, undefeated too, +4 and a TPR of 2825. Karjakin gains about 15-16 points. I'm most disappointed with Jakovenko and Eljanov, along with Magnus the most recent additions to the 2700 club. Eljanov will officially be 2707 in a couple days, but here he went -2 with only one win against avg of 2694, for a 2629 TPR. Jakovenko, who will be 2735 on the july list, faced an average of about 2690, but also scored -2 with only one win in 11 rounds, for a dismal 2627 TPR. Both players are dropping around 10 points here, so unofficially Eljanov is below 2700 again... |

I'm basically a Magnus (2704) fan, but if he'd scored -2 against an average 45 points below himself (2660) for a TPR of (own rating - 110) = 2595, then I wouldn't have objected if someone called his performance "dismal". When Topalov performed (own rating - 90) = 2690 in Linares, then for many "dismal" didn't even cover it... But I can change it to "very disappointing, indeed" if that makes you happy :) PS! Yeah, like your quote indcates, I "judge" Jakovenko's performance according to his unofficial (but official in a day or two) 2735 rating. Of course, 99,999% of the chess players in the world would've been delirious by a 2600+ performance, but such things are relative, don't you agree? :) |

Karjakin's +3 was a positive surprise, and it was unexpected that Onischuk and van Wely finished even with Svidler on +1. Sasikiran and Nisipeanu found the opposition in Mtel easier to handle. |

1.Ivanchuk is not "burdened" with playing in the World Championship and therefore just enjoys the game. We know it can be devastationg for his opponents 2. Karjakin was in the shadows of the famous Norwegian genius for a while. Natural change in tide positions Karjakin in the up move 3.Svidler - see Ivanchuk from opposite angle
4.Shirov - better than I expected. He was lucky here also 5.Onishuk - as a No.2 player in US (and of course due to former USSR connections) he gets quite a few invitations to strong tournaments. No big wins, but no failures either. 6.Van Wely - his image of weak player getting to play with elite is not fair at at all. This tournament partly proof of it 7.Dominguez - talented player, but for whatever reason can not brake through 8.Rublevsky - he was tired after Elista and got great vacation in Foros. 9. Jakovenko - can't win everything. Just a bump in the road to the top 10.Eljanov - to become 2700 player is good achievement, but proving you deserve it is much more difficult 11. Sasikiran- should forget this tournament.
