  PhilFeeley: Onischuk-Nisipeanu: 1-0

The Sasikiran-Van Wely game unfortunately had the wrong position posted (sorry about that!) Black had a qeeen's rook & bishop pawn and eventually promoted the rook pawn: 0-1

Jun-29-07  Mameluk: With rook on f7 it is of course already easy, but Nisi could prevent it, he played very poorly. And then I would like to see Onischuk:) Check with tablebase the longest lines, this is real sci-fi.
Jun-29-07  TheGladiator: Very impressive 2793 TPR from Karjakin, undefeated and +3 against an average of 2694. And we must be equally impressed with Chuky, making another stellar performance, undefeated too, +4 and a TPR of 2825. Karjakin gains about 15-16 points.

I'm most disappointed with Jakovenko and Eljanov, along with Magnus the most recent additions to the 2700 club. Eljanov will officially be 2707 in a couple days, but here he went -2 with only one win against avg of 2694, for a 2629 TPR. Jakovenko, who will be 2735 on the july list, faced an average of about 2690, but also scored -2 with only one win in 11 rounds, for a dismal 2627 TPR. Both players are dropping around 10 points here, so unofficially Eljanov is below 2700 again...

plang: It was a very strong field with no easy marks. The bottom line is that someone has to finish last.
Jun-29-07  TheGladiator: <plang>

And Sasi and Nisi were the sissies... ;)

We must have different definitions of the word "dismal".

THE pawn: Hahaha! I just saw Chucky-Svidler. 19 moves draw. I imagine Svidler said: « ah...screw that, is this over? I'm hungry».
Jun-29-07  TheGladiator: <We must have different definitions of the word "dismal".>

You think so? I'm basically a Magnus (2704) fan, but if he'd scored -2 against an average 45 points below himself (2660) for a TPR of (own rating - 110) = 2595, then I wouldn't have objected if someone called his performance "dismal". When Topalov performed (own rating - 90) = 2690 in Linares, then for many "dismal" didn't even cover it...

But I can change it to "very disappointing, indeed" if that makes you happy :)

PS! Yeah, like your quote indcates, I "judge" Jakovenko's performance according to his unofficial (but official in a day or two) 2735 rating. Of course, 99,999% of the chess players in the world would've been delirious by a 2600+ performance, but such things are relative, don't you agree? :)

percyblakeney: Ivanchuk was undefeated in Aerosvit also last year (+3 -0 =8 then), when the tournament may have been even stronger, with for example Mamedyarov, Grischuk, and Ponomariov.

Karjakin's +3 was a positive surprise, and it was unexpected that Onischuk and van Wely finished even with Svidler on +1. Sasikiran and Nisipeanu found the opposition in Mtel easier to handle.

Jun-29-07  adair10: My superficial take on Foros results.

1.Ivanchuk is not "burdened" with playing in the World Championship and therefore just enjoys the game. We know it can be devastationg for his opponents

2. Karjakin was in the shadows of the famous Norwegian genius for a while. Natural change in tide positions Karjakin in the up move

3.Svidler - see Ivanchuk from opposite angle

4.Shirov - better than I expected. He was lucky here also

5.Onishuk - as a No.2 player in US (and of course due to former USSR connections) he gets quite a few invitations to strong tournaments. No big wins, but no failures either.

6.Van Wely - his image of weak player getting to play with elite is not fair at at all. This tournament partly proof of it

7.Dominguez - talented player, but for whatever reason can not brake through

8.Rublevsky - he was tired after Elista and got great vacation in Foros.

9. Jakovenko - can't win everything. Just a bump in the road to the top

10.Eljanov - to become 2700 player is good achievement, but proving you deserve it is much more difficult

11. Sasikiran- should forget this tournament.

12. Nisipianu - MTel, Elista (as a second) and now this... Too much

So Ivanchuk will gain around 12 points, making his new effective rating around 2774, right?

Jun-30-07  TheGladiator: <7.Dominguez - talented player, but for whatever reason can not brake through>

If he tried to break through instead, it might help ;) Putting on the brakes can't be a smart move... :)

Jun-30-07  maarnold: Does anyone know where and when Ivanchuk will be playing next?

Thankfully got letters right. What a brakethrough for me!

amuralid: Does anyone know the prize fund for this tournament? I am interested in knowing how much Sergey made. I know one of the main concerns his mother had was lack of sponsorship and the financial burden.
Jul-01-07  shintaro go: Karjakin gains 17 points after Aerosvit. From 2678 to 2695. Not quite 2700+ yet.
Jul-01-07  DCP23: <amuralid: Does anyone know the prize fund for this tournament? I am interested in knowing how much Sergey made. I know one of the main concerns his mother had was lack of sponsorship and the financial burden.>

Aerosvit 2007:

1st prize $20 000
2nd prize $15 000
3rd prize $12 000
4th prize $10 000
5th prize $9 000
6th prize $8 000
7th prize $7 000
8th prize $7 000
9th prize $6 000
10th prize $6 000
11th prize $5 000
12th prize $5 000

Aside from that, the CEO of Aerosvit offered 3 special prizes: "For most wins with Black" - $4 000; "For the best attack" - $3 000; "For the best endgame" - $3 000.

Shirov got the "most Black wins" prize -- he had 3 Black wins, Ivanchuk got the "endgame" prize for his Q vs R+B effort against Nisipeanu, and van Wely got the "attack" prize for his demolition of Jakovenko.

Jul-01-07  malthrope: Thanks also <DCP23> for that AeroSvit prize breakdown and game awards distribution. It was nice to see the game prize money being spread around to Chuky (for endgame), Alexey (highest total number of black victories) and Loek (a very forceful attack)! ;-) - Mal

Jul-04-07  Dr.Lecter: how much rating did ivanchuk and karjakin gain from this tourney?
Jul-10-07  arunjangity: 15-ish for karjak per <gladiator>, slightly less for ivanchuk i would think.

i wish they could rename the tournament to AEROSMITH and invite the band of the same name. think of the publicity for both sport and band alike!

Jul-10-07  Red October: hhmmmm Steven Tyler singing "Janie's got mate in 1" ? I dont think so..
