I hadn't realized that Taimanov and Averbakh were still alive until today. Meanwhile, I haven't heard of much of the other players. USSR is winning right now, and I predict taht they will be the eventual winner. Nov-08-07    Riverbeast: The battle of the old schoolers! Yugoslavia couldn't beat the USSR when they were young - what makes them think they can win now? These old Russians used to beat the 'Rest of the World' team back in their day... My man Korchnoi is of course king of the old folks. I'm looking forward to watching him cut through these seniors like butter. Nov-08-07    pawnofdoom: The age of these players are amazing. Averbakh is about 85 and Gligoric is almost 90 now. And of course, you can't forget korchnoi. Who knew there were players older than Korchnoi that still play competatively? It was probably a homecoming of sorts for him. He wouldn't have left the USSR if they hadn't treated him so shabbily. Besides, those GMs were probably forced to sign that petition, if they wanted to keep on playing...He probably doesn't feel any animosity toward them. I'm sure many of them are old 'comrades'. The old USSR is gone, but the old man keeps on kicking...Dancing on the proverbial grave, so to speak Dec-23-07    perfidious: <Riverbeast> Bronstein refused to sign, and paid a heavy price; he didn't get to play outside the Iron Curtain for a number of years.
