Ivkov 1/2 Vasiukov
Matanovic 1/2 Taimanov
Velimirovic 1-0 Balashov

Nice to see players like Averbakh, Taimanov, and Korchnoi plaing. I hadn't realized that Taimanov and Averbakh were still alive until today. Meanwhile, I haven't heard of much of the other players. USSR is winning right now, and I predict taht they will be the eventual winner. |

| Nov-08-07 | | Riverbeast: The battle of the old schoolers!
Yugoslavia couldn't beat the USSR when they were young - what makes them think they can win now? These old Russians used to beat the 'Rest of the World' team back in their day... My man Korchnoi is of course king of the old folks. I'm looking forward to watching him cut through these seniors like butter. |
 |
| Nov-08-07 | | pawnofdoom: The age of these players are amazing.
Averbakh is about 85 and Gligoric is almost 90 now. And of course, you can't forget korchnoi. Who knew there were players older than Korchnoi that still play competatively? |

 | | Benzol: All they need now is to get Andre Lilienthal to give commentary on the games as they happen. :) |
 |
Nov-08-07
 | | WannaBe: How about Pal Benko doing the commentaries? =) |

 | | Quintiliano: Why Matulovic and Parma are not there? |
 |
| Nov-09-07 | | Riverbeast: They really wheeled these guys out...I haven't seen a live tournament game from Gligoric or Averbakh in my life...This is an interesting match idea |
 |
| Nov-09-07 | | Red October: yes i was very interested in seeing how these war horses slug it out |

:)> I will not be surprised if someone says that the countries should be restored and the players should be granted original USSR and Yugoslavia passports... :) |

Nov-09-07
 | | ahmadov: <cannibal: Actually for many of them this is more about meeting old colleagues and friends than about playing chess.> It is quite true and maybe this is the reason why this tournament has not caused much interest among chess fans... |
 |
| Nov-09-07 | | savagerules: Wonder if Geritol, Depends or Viagra is doing any advertising at this tournament? |
 |
Nov-10-07
 | | jamesmaskell: A lot of very early draws here, one of the drawbacks of having players of such age in a match. USSR will walk this. As for giving those players respective passports for their countries, I have a funny feeling Korchnoi might object... |
 |
| Nov-10-07 | | Astardis: Is that Igor Zaitsev playing here the former Karpov coach? |
 |
| Nov-10-07 | | russep: Is this tournament an all play all tournament? |

Nov-10-07
 | | Whack8888: Hehe, this is a really cool idea for a tournament! |

Nov-11-07
 | | sisyphus: It's nice to see Velimirovic hasn't lost the balls that made him one of the great attackers. You don't see the Göring Gambit much. |

Nov-11-07
 | | Octavia: nice comp! also nice to see 3 women were included - probably a higher % then were playing in those days. But today the % of women at the top is getting bigger - slowly. By top i mean < 2100 elo. |
 |
| Nov-13-07 | | Nikita Smirnov: Nice to see such an old tournament. |
 |
| Nov-16-07 | | Marmot PFL: Strange to see Korchnoi on a team with all the GMs who signed that petition against him back in the 70s. |
 |
| Nov-19-07 | | Autoreparaturwerkbau: <pawnofdoom> Gligoric seems to be 84,5 y. old, not 90. Still damn impressive. Korchnoi is 76,5 y. old, not 84. |
 |
| Nov-19-07 | | Riverbeast: <Strange to see Korchnoi on a team with all the GMs who signed that petition against him back in the 70s.> I suppose Viktor decided to let bygones be bygones...He's an old man now, no need to carry a grudge into the fourth decade. It was probably a homecoming of sorts for him. He wouldn't have left the USSR if they hadn't treated him so shabbily. Besides, those GMs were probably forced to sign that petition, if they wanted to keep on playing...He probably doesn't feel any animosity toward them. I'm sure many of them are old 'comrades'. The old USSR is gone, but the old man keeps on kicking...Dancing on the proverbial grave, so to speak |

 | | perfidious: <Riverbeast> Bronstein refused to sign, and paid a heavy price; he didn't get to play outside the Iron Curtain for a number of years. |
 |
| Dec-23-07 | | MichAdams: Playing solely within the Iron Curtain put him at a heavy material disadvantage. |
