Jan-15-08  frogbert: <Yes but she made up for it today. What a materpiece!>

really? in practical terms it worked, of course, but after studying the position a little more than just superficially with the engines, it seems that gelfand could more than hold, even after black penetrated on the 2nd row. bf3? was the final mistake for white, it seems. until then, white was probably fine, objectively speaking (but a nightmare to defend for a human, i'd say).

Jan-15-08  Jim Bartle: I notice none of those photos had captions. Obviously waiting for WannaBe and TD to swoop in.

WB: Did you see the photo of Gelfand at the bottom of the "in between" page?

Jan-15-08  Ezzy: <Wannabe> lol. An alternative -

'Boris, did you see my game against Yifan Hou'

YouRang: Who's that guy on the far left with the pointy hat? ;-)
Jan-15-08  Jim Bartle: S: Hou beat me.
G: I don't know. Hou?
S: Yes.
G: Hou beat you?
S: Yes.
G: Was it a short game?
S: Of course.
Jan-15-08  Ezzy: <YouRang: Who's that guy on the far left with the pointy hat? ;-)> Lol. Very funny. Well spotted!!
Jan-15-08  Resignation Trap: <Jim Bartle> To complete your Abbott-and-Costello routine, you need players named Howe, Ware, Wei and Watt.
Jan-15-08  Jim Bartle: Unfortunately absent. But if Ms. Hou ever takes the lead in her group, I'll be ready.
Jan-15-08  Resignation Trap: One thing that I admire about Topalov: after a bad start in a tournament, he usually comes roaring back into contention quickly. He lost to van Wely today and he's really frustrated, that's when Vesko is most dangerous. On Thursday, he'll come back just as mean and twice as ugly. Gelfand won't be able to hold a candle to him...

...or will he? http://www.coruschess.com/year/2008... .

Jan-15-08  Kaspy2: folks, at chessbookie, Leko is totally underrated for win. You wanna make a quick chessbuck, bet on win on the DRAWMEISTER ! (maybe a smaller sum on draw as well vs. Polgar ;-) )

suenteus po 147: <WannaBe> LOL! Thank you! That made my day. I haven't laughed so well since the semester started. I must add that the second "quite the wit" is sheer brilliance!

JustWoodshifting: I was just looking at the Corus Group A list from last year. Missing this year:

Motylev, Ponomariov, Karjakin, Navara, Shirov, Tiviakov, and Svidler.

JustWoodshifting: Last year, I remember thinking that Karjakin was the rising star in the world of chess.

This I'm thinking Arik Braun (Group C) is looking very good. Crushed Van der Werf today.

JustWoodshifting: Besides Arik Braun, I think that this year, Polgar and van Wely seeem to have taken the next step in preparation and execution. Watch out for Kramnik, though. He also looks top form (I like this guy. He exudes class).

Vishy, as a world champ,is playing just so-so. I expected better.

Jan-16-08  geezerbloke: wow after taking black against kramnik and radjabov then white against polgar and topalov who would have predicted a plus one score for loek? not me thats for sure, well done that man.
Jan-16-08  somitra: <JustWoodshifting: Vishy, as a world champ,is playing just so-so. I expected better.>

I guess Vishy is in preparation mode in this tournament. He is trying to play 1. d4 and extend his repertoire. He seems to be trying new ideas to get ready for Kramnik match later this year. In fact, now I am doubting whether he is even trying to win this tourney.

BishopofBlunder: The C group seems to be the one to watch. Only 7 draws out of 28 games! That's 75% decisive games!

Compared to 75% draws in group A. Although most of the draws, at least the ones I have looked at, in group A have been very entertaining.

Open Defence: heh nice pic... seems like 1c4 can bring a super GM to tears
Jan-16-08  firebyrd: And http://www.coruschess.com/year/2008..., Gelfand trying to get a tell on whether Aronian has prepared anything for 1. a4.

Wow, Gelfand looks even more peculiar than usual in that photo. Almost diabolical.

Jan-16-08  minasina: So, someone is going to ask: “No games today?” No, round #5 will start TOMORROW, THURSday, Jan-17-2008.
