Feb-10-08  percyblakeney: I think it's the first time that the transmission of the women's section seems to be working, but they only follow other games than the one that decides the winner, Muzychuk-Harika.
Feb-10-08  researchj: Muzychuk wins the tournament even with a loss in the last round, acording to the additional criteria.
Feb-10-08  percyblakeney: <researchj> OK, she has had a very good tournament and is a deserving winner. Still a bit strange that the first board is the one not being followed.

Amusing position. Fritz has white ahead by about a pawn...go figure.

Feb-10-08  percyblakeney: Volkov and Efimenko can't finish lower than shared third after their wins today.
Feb-10-08  percyblakeney: After Lastin's draw it's clear that he will share second with Volkov, Efimenko, Timofeev/Inarkiev and probably several other players as well.

SwitchingQuylthulg: Timofeev seems to be winning now, which would put him alone at 7.5/9.

Timofeev-Inarkiev after 90....Be2

Feb-10-08  percyblakeney: Inarkiev had a draw with 78. ... f4 but now it seems pointless to keep playing.

Black resigned.

Feb-10-08  percyblakeney: 14 decisive results on the top 17 boards in the final round of a tournament must be some kind of record.
Feb-10-08  hovik2003: Round IX was such a terrible day for Armenian men, they all got routed and lost horribly! (Asrian, Akopian and the rest), and hails to and viva for Armenian women! (Danielian, Ambartsumova, Airapetian) when they all won and tried hard to gain back some of the lost waters into the main river.

PhilFeeley: <brankat> Nope. She's married to our Canadian champion, so I like to follow their progress.

PhilFeeley: Some of the women were playing in the "A" tournament, so I expected to see all the results and pairings there. I finally found them in the "C" tournament.

I see Sutovsky and Nyzhnyk both ended with 4. Bad for Sutovsky, but was it good for Nyzhnyk?

Eyal: Congratulations to the winner Timofeev, who finished with a +6 score and no losses - winning some very nice attacking games (such as A Timofeev vs V Iordachescu, 2008), as well as some marathonic endgames (such as V Belov vs A Timofeev, 2008 and the last-round game with Inarkiev)...

tamar: Yes, Timofeev showed the best confidence, beating Inarkiev and Efimenko, and drawing Riazantsev.

Question for anyone:

Does the Moscow Open carry any invitation to a Super Tournament for its winner?

Eyal: <tamar> The winner of the Aeroflot Open, which starts very soon in Moscow, gets an invitation to Dortmund - but I never saw anything similar mentioned with regard to the Moscow open.

tamar: thanks <Eyal> I didn't think so. Pity because Timofeev looks ready to move up.

Feb-11-08  hitman84: Congratulations to Timofeev.
Feb-11-08  Ezzy: Well done to Timofeev!. What a big confidence booster this must be. Finishing last in the Russian championships superfinal 2007, and then hitting back to win the strong Moscow open. That takes some character.
Feb-13-08  percyblakeney: Several games are commented at Chesspro, some not uploaded here since they weren't played at the top boards. Elshad Mamedov (2099)-Valery Grechinin (2306) started with 1. c3 f5 2. h3 Nf6 3. g4 fxg4 4. hxg4 Nxg4:

Golubev explains what white should play (and did in a game from 1991) to immediately bring home the point in case of 5. Qc2 Nf6:

http://chesspro.ru/_events/2008/mop...

Mamedov played 5. Qa4 and won quickly anyway. (If 5. Qc2 Nf6 the winning move is 6. Rxh7.)

Feb-15-08  stanleys: Very nice video from the women's section:
