True, but he is the world champion. He is supposed to be impressive.

Mar-06-08  laserlight: <Please God, dont let Anand win, i just hate the way he is doing it, draws, draws....>

I think his philosophy is: you win some, you draw some, in that order.

Mar-06-08  Abejorral: <Hang on. First place, even shared first place, in a tournament with Topalov, Leko, Aronian, Shirov, Carlsen, Ivanchuk and Radjabov is damned impressive>

I dont think so, Kasparov used to win Linares, no sharing first place, and with much more won games against stronger opposition.

Mar-06-08  unsound: Anand's won more games than anyone else except Carlsen.

percyblakeney: Anything can happen in Anand-Topalov in the last round, Topalov is beating Leko and will still have chances to take the title.

Mar-06-08  slomarko: <Please God, dont let Anand win, i just hate the way he is doing it, draws, draws....> i don't understand why are so many people attacking Anand for his draws. he learned from Kramnik make a couple of wins to take you to +2 or +3 and then draw the rest.

Chess Classics: <znprdx> Eh, I don't really know. Kasparov was okay with Linares 1993 when he got second place to Ivanchuk. Nobody really contested that Kasparov was the champ then (except for Rustam Kamsky, but he was a nutcase.) Whoever wins this tournament has impressed me, whether it's Anand solely or a four-way tie.

CC

But znprdx seemed to be saying that a shared first <wouldn't> be impressive at all. I disagree.

Anyway, having the world champion title doesn't magically make you invincible or unstoppable. We've had primus inter pares champions and dominant champions, and I think Anand falls more into the former category. A champion who wins tournaments constantly for years and years, like Karpov and Kasparov did, is very rare.

Mar-06-08  Riverbeast: These guys are playing for draws against Anand with white...what is he supposed to do? He can't win every game.

Shirov on the other hand, is getting passed around like a spliff

Mar-06-08  Abejorral: <dramas79>

My point is that if Anands wins with shared 1st place, it wont be impressive at all.

percyblakeney: It's hard to complain about Anand not winning enough tournaments, he won Linares last year, as the World Championship, and seems to win Linares again this year.
Mar-06-08  Abejorral: <i don't understand why are so many people attacking Anand for his draws. he learned from Kramnik make a couple of wins to take you to +2 or +3 and then draw the rest>

So, we should be blaming Kramnik ? :-)

percyblakeney: After today Topalov will have won the last seven decisive games between him and Leko.
Mar-06-08  Riverbeast: <My point is that if Anands wins with shared 1st place, it wont be impressive at all.>

Maybe not to you.

Winning Category 21 tournaments is always impressive to me

percyblakeney: Now if Leko had drawn that final game in Brissago and been the World Champion now I'm sure there would be some complaints :-)
