mkrk17: Of late, the way Topa is playing (very shakily), it wont be difficult for Kamsky to defeat him in their match later this year.

Kamsky is getting stronger with every tournament, and Topa is getting shakier with every game he plays.

May-19-08  Pjalle: To see Aronian at -4 is very unexpected, what's up with that?

I don't know if it will be that easy, after all Topalov scored +3 here and played quite well, while Kamsky had a minus score in the slightly weaker Baku tournament.

May-19-08  shortsight: But Kamsky at match play is a very difficult and solid opponent. Not to say that he will surely beat Topalov, but there will be 50%-50% chances. I see Kamsky as the lesser Kramnik of now, and Topalov as the lesser of the Topalov that faced kramnik in their match.

He didn't have much of a chance against Gelfand in their Candidates match last year though, but he may well be in better shape now, and in any case a match of eight games is so short that anything can happen. My guess is that Topalov will win with a margin of two points, but I wouldn't bet too much on that.

May-19-08  hand banana: topalov will eat him alive. and i'm not a fan of topalov.
May-19-08  arnaud1959: Chucky is maybe the only player who makes everybody happy when he wins. I think because he's strong in all the areas of the game. Except of course in the psychological area.

Aronian's result is very disappointing. I thought he was mature and solid enough to have good results in any tournament but I was wrong. He reminds me of Larsen who could win the strongest tournaments and then be the last in a weaker tournament. But even then, unlike Aronian in Mtel, he could lose all his games and beat the winner.

May-19-08  wallytherhino: <hand banana> O Really?
May-19-08  ongyj: <chessgames.com> Not that it matters alot, but perhaps the presentation should be as fault-free as possible. Since in terms of tie-breaks, the player with the greater # of wins wins, Bu Xiangzhi should be #5 and Levon Aronian #6. Hence, the name positions should swap with each other.

Or am I misunderstanding / missing something?

chessgames.com: <ongyj> First, if you have ideas to improve the site it's much more effective to post them to Chessgames.com chessforum

Anyhow, regarding your idea: it would be great if the leaderboard was savvy to the particular tiebreak protocol used for the tournaments, but it's not. Keep in mind that the particulars of the tiebreak system varies from tournament to tournament, and often it is highly complex. Therefore it shows contestants with tied scores in essentially random order.

herby rawley: go to LIVE LEAK.com search for
Kasparov,,,,see the attack he couldn't
defend ...
Kasparov said something funny in Russian showed marvelous aplomb
May-20-08  sitzkrieg: you mean this attack? http://www.dumpert.nl/mediabase/112...
May-22-08  wallytherhino: What happened to Aronian? He didn't take last place but he also never won a single game. Was this tournament too tough for him? Should Aronian move back down to category 16 or 17 events where he can at least keep an even score? Aronian is still young. Did Aronian's play a factor?

sapfy: <wallytherhino: What happened to Aronian? He didn't take last place>

He did in fact take last place, due to worse tie-break (Bu had more wins).

May-22-08  wallytherhino: <sapfy>
My bad on chessgames they show Aronian taking fifth place. Thank you for the friendly clarification.
May-25-08  Knight13: LOL Aronian at 2763 can't even win one game LOL and loses 4 LOL.

There goes his rating points. Sssss oooo that hurts!

technical draw: Hey <Knight13> I lost $500 cb's on Aronian. Now that hurts!
May-25-08  Knight13: <technical draw> I know!
Jul-04-08  geigermuller: The little number of draws in this turnament was amazing, wasn't it?
Jul-04-08  Vollmer: I would add that the draws that occurred were much longer (around 40 moves) than we have seen in other draw infested events . IMHO draws are not bad but short draws that in the past would have been played further are not good . As I play through many of the recent short draws I fail to appreciate the "It looks drawish , lets go have a beer" mentality . I cannot help but wonder where the 'fighting spirit' has fled to . Perhaps the next generation of players will be better funded and less inclined to laziness ?
Jun-24-12  hellopolgar: This is what an in-form Vassily Ivanchuk can do, 2 wins against Ivan Cheparinov and one win+one draw against the other four players.

perfidious: <smaragdus: In my opinion Aronian has been extremely overestimated. He has not the potential of Carlsen or Gashimov for example. He will oscillate between 5-12 and will deteriorate with years. He reminds me of Gelfand, a good and stable player, but he lacks the inspiration and the touch of genial virtuosity the best players possess. The new wave- the young Azeri, the Norwegian brat, the Chinese, eventually Topalov's aide-de-camp, will sweep him far and away from the top.>

Somehow Aronian has persevered despite yet another naysayer who wrote him off thus. More than four years on, we await the inevitable demise of the young grandmaster.

Good thing he (and others) can think for themselves, else there would be nothing left but the all too apparent jealousy of some for others' achievements. Aronian may never win the title, but he remains a terrific player.
