| May-19-08 | | shortsight: But Kamsky at match play is a very difficult and solid opponent. Not to say that he will surely beat Topalov, but there will be 50%-50% chances. I see Kamsky as the lesser Kramnik of now, and Topalov as the lesser of the Topalov that faced kramnik in their match. |

My guess is that Topalov will win with a margin of two points, but I wouldn't bet too much on that. |

| May-19-08 | | arnaud1959: Chucky is maybe the only player who makes everybody happy when he wins. I think because he's strong in all the areas of the game. Except of course in the psychological area. Aronian's result is very disappointing. I thought he was mature and solid enough to have good results in any tournament but I was wrong. He reminds me of Larsen who could win the strongest tournaments and then be the last in a weaker tournament. But even then, unlike Aronian in Mtel, he could lose all his games and beat the winner. |

Since in terms of tie-breaks, the player with the greater # of wins wins, Bu Xiangzhi should be #5 and Levon Aronian #6. Hence, the name positions should swap with each other. Or am I misunderstanding / missing something? |

Keep in mind that the particulars of the tiebreak system varies from tournament to tournament, and often it is highly complex. Therefore it shows contestants with tied scores in essentially random order. |

| Jul-04-08 | | Vollmer: I would add that the draws that occurred were much longer (around 40 moves) than we have seen in other draw infested events . IMHO draws are not bad but short draws that in the past would have been played further are not good . As I play through many of the recent short draws I fail to appreciate the "It looks drawish , lets go have a beer" mentality . I cannot help but wonder where the 'fighting spirit' has fled to . Perhaps the next generation of players will be better funded and less inclined to laziness ? |

He will oscillate between 5-12 and will deteriorate with years. He reminds me of Gelfand, a good and stable player, but he lacks the inspiration and the touch of genial virtuosity the best players possess. The new wave- the young Azeri, the Norwegian brat, the Chinese, eventually Topalov's aide-de-camp, will sweep him far and away from the top.> Somehow Aronian has persevered despite yet another naysayer who wrote him off thus. More than four years on, we await the inevitable demise of the young grandmaster. Good thing he (and others) can think for themselves, else there would be nothing left but the all too apparent jealousy of some for others' achievements. Aronian may never win the title, but he remains a terrific player. |
