brankat: All drawn. We can probably expect a lot of it in this event.
May-25-08  dumbgai: Not sure whether this was intentional, but it seems the entire field were top-tier players back in the 1970s.
May-25-08  timhortons: nigel short prefer to join these tournament other than the bosnia,if he join the tournament in bosnia it would have been a complete cast of last years participant, its good to see gm mihai suba playing here,he used to chat with me at chess circle.net

virginmind: <dumbgai> it was intentional, that's why the name: kings' tournament (as in plural - in romanian "turneul regilor"). well, nigel short is a last moment addition, for some reason he switched from bosna tournament to this one.

unfortunately last year there were a lot of draws, i hope they won't do the same this year - or at least that there will be well fought draws...

May-25-08  hitman84: <brankat>You're right, you can't expect the old timers to play out each game like they do in Sofia.

Although I'd count Nigel short out of the old timers club as he still is capable of winning elite tourneys.

Andrei Murariu is the local hero, and the youngest participant.

virginmind: <hitman84> i think he won last year's edition, thats why they included him now.
May-25-08  hitman84: <virginmind>According to chessdom..

<Andrei Murariu is born at 17 February 1986 in Roman. He won Open ROMGAZ 2007 in Eforie Nord, victory who qualified him for Kings Tournaments 2008. From 2006 he is GM and he won many international competitions (between them two editions of Victor Ciocaltea Memorial). Two medals with the national youth team of Romania, at the European Championships in 2003 and 2004. Member of the national team of Romania for the European Championship of 2007. >

Khalifman won the previous edition.

It's a 11 player tournament! I think all the players get a bye.

virginmind: but i dont see chiburdanidze and ribli, i dont know why <cg> put their names in the <featuring> list
May-25-08  hitman84: On the official website its mentioned..

<The players list is mainly the same (there are missing Zoltan Ribli and Maia Chiburdanidze, the new apparitions being Nigel Short and Andrei Murariu).>

http://www.turneulregilor.ro/en/ind...

I think all the editions of Bazna kings have the same players.

This tournament reminds me of the senior ATP tennis tour which mainly consists of retired professionals who are still keen to take part in professional events. although here in chess we have just one such tourney.

I guess they couldn't find suitable replacements(old timers) for Ribli and Maia who probably informed the officials that they wouldn't be available for this edition well in advance. The organizers decided to include the winner of ROMGAZ 2007. Nigel Short got the invite as well.

I don't know if Karpov was invited, but I'm sure he'd have declined the invitation.

virginmind: karpov, korchnoi, yes, as of age they would fit in, but surely being still active (and quite strong) they must believe they don't belong here.

i dont know about spasski, i think he is the director of the tournament, but not playing

Strongest Force: Good to see Mecking playing again ,,, talked alot of "smack" in his youth... saying stuff like he was second in west behind Fischer ... Larsen had to (and did) put the "smack-down" on him... :)

virginmind: on the romanian chess federation site there's an interview with mecking (taken by dinu ioan nicula on may 20th - only in romanian language) in which he says that in last year's edition he ranked so badly because he failed to go to the church in the first two days. but this year he is going to attend church daily, with his second, and that his second will pray for him in his room while mecking would play.

he said he plans to recover his former elo rating of 2635. he also said he didnt play in torino olympiad in 2006 for brazil team, because he didnt like the idea of playing at fourth table.

he seems a very religious guy and he is convinced that Jesus will come back to earth in 5-10 years as there are more and more signs for that in brazil lately "and because he is my main supporter, the closer he is, the better i'll play!" http://www.frsah.ro/index.htm

May-25-08  wolfmaster: Is this a single round robin? If so, the winner will probably have a score of about 5.5/9. If I had to bet, I think it will be a tie between Sokolov and Short.
May-25-08  timhortons: <virgenmind> thats funny:)

shr0pshire: Whenever I hear the name Henrique Mecking come up again, and it has been a while since I last heard his name, I am reminded of this quotiation by Tony Miles.

“Henrique Mecking ... apparently, plays just one tournament every three years ... spending most of his time studiously preparing for the moment when the World Championship will be his. I will not bore you with my views on this practice but suffice it to say I consider it most unnatural and faintly unhealthy. Having said this I must confess that I’ve just lost to him without getting out of the opening.”

Mecking was quite the player.

virginmind: ok, portisch gave us the single win today, after a nice fought game against murariu.
May-25-08  Wone Jone: <virginmind> Wait, you mean Portisch is still alive?! I guess Smyslov wasn't available!
May-25-08  savagerules: Ulf Anderssen in his element. The question for Ulf is not that every game will be a draw, but if every draw can be made in under 30 moves.

brankat: <Wone Jone> <Wait, you mean Portisch is still alive?! I guess Smyslov wasn't available!>

Portisch is 71, still very active. No reason why he would not be. His whole life he has been a professional player. A great one. Just like Korchnoi (77).

Not to mention one V.Smyslov, a former Champion, who is now 87, and blind.

Keeping in mind their many accomplishments and contributions over decades, I don't see why would You find it necessary to ridicule them now, in their advanced age.

Incidentally, out of 10 games played in the tourney so far, it is Portisch who has the only win.

Stonehenge: Doesn't seem to work very well though.
May-26-08  Nikita Smirnov: I think that there will be many draws in this tournament.Introduce the nice rule they have in MTel Masters. No draws and more fun to watch our heroes in action. But there is a weak side. The players get tired.
