May-31-08  sheaf: to be honest anand isnt really playing very well while ivanchuk is playing at his best.. its going to be difficult for anand to retain the title.. but then again anand knows ivanchuk for over 15 years, its going to be difficult for ivanchuk as well
May-31-08  transpositions: What you have to remember is that like Fischer, lately Chucky is the Chucky of old, he fears no one. In fact it is the other player that fears the caveman genius in Chucky. Even IBM's Deep Blue would fear Chucky. It would malfunction in the force field that Chucky's brain generates. Not to mention Deep could sense how unstable a genius mind it is facing in a finite gamescape where there is no escape into infinity.

And, finally, like Fischer, even at 39, Vassily Ivanchuk retains that personality that marries a child's wonder to genius's intellect. It makes you laugh like humor, but at the same time you recognize in him what we recognize in musical geniuses like John Lennon, Bach, Bethoven, etc. Like Billy Joel's lyric,"and then you realize Vienna waits or you"

May-31-08  messachess: Anyone know time controls and number of rounds?

PhilFeeley: Time controls are rapid: 20 minutes per side, 4 games (unless one side wins the first two and draws the third as Ivanchuk did). Tie-break goes to blitz as in Vallejo-Pons vs Anand. All details on the website: http://www.advancedchessleon.com/
May-31-08  lorker: Congrats Ivanchuk for the decisive victory over Shirov! However in Game 3, if Ivanchuk had played for a win instead of a draw, he could have easily held the game and maybe even won it. Instead, he was slightly lucky not to lose close to the end.

Great post <transpositions> ! :))

So good in fact I've just added <You> to my "favorites" list! ;)

And, welcome to CG.com! <grin>

Can't wait for the 'Anand-Ivanchuk' match-up in the finals! :^)

PS: <sheaf> - excellent post and <YES> these two know one another like books... I see a great Chess match forthcoming on <SUPER GM SUNDAY> and may the best player WIN! ;)

Jun-01-08  VaselineTopLove: What machine and software are they using to assist them during the games in this Advanced Match?
Jun-01-08  malthrope: <VaselineTopLove: What machine and software are they using to assist them during the games in this Advanced Match?>

Those were the old days in this event. However, the term "Advance Chess" was retained. Now it's just a straight Rapids match with Blitz tiebreaks (if needed). All the essential info can be found on the official website: http://www.advancedchessleon.com/ ;) - Mal

Jun-01-08  ajit: What time does it start? Where do we watch it live? Thanks
Jun-01-08  Udit Narayan: Ivanchuk is in excellent form, still fresh from his triumphant M-Tel Masters. However, I predict a win for Vishy by a slight margin.
Jun-01-08  Method B: Chucky has won the first one with black!

Jun-01-08  malthrope: WoW! Chucky is an absolute monster! ;) It had everything defense, counterattack and most of all '0-1' game #1 to Chucky! :^)
Jun-01-08  nothingness99: I think Ivanchuk will win the tournament. Like Topalov mention in the previous tourna, when somebody play on the roll like that it's unstopable!!!
Jun-01-08  malthrope: Hehehe... I wouldn't count Vishy out just yet. However, Chucky is in a very good mood, atm! :^)
Jun-01-08  malthrope: Vishy fights back and wins game #2 were back at <even> ! ;)
