notyetagm: <vanytchouck: pretty finish in the Gelfand - Carlsen game.

Magnus loves this motive :

a pawn ready to be promoted and let's simplify this by massive exchanges wich start with a sacrifice (against Onischuk in the tie break at Biel last year, against Polgar at Mainz).>

Very good memory. But that was a different mechanism.

Against Onischuk he used the <REMOVE THE GUARD> idea of ...QxR!, destroying the enemy rook which <DEFENDS> the promotion square of the passer.

Here against Gelfand he played ... RxBf2!, the <EXCHANGE ON THE PINNING SQUARE> idea.

notyetagm: <cannibal: Kramnik somehow wins a dead drawn rook endgame against Grachev to lead after the first day. Carlsen and Ivanchuk half a point behind.>

Just doesn't seem complete without Aronian and Anand playing. They finished #1 and #2 in 2006 at the Tal Memorial blitz tournament.

Sep-15-09  chessmoron: Wow! What a lineup for 2009 Tal Memorial.

World Champion Vishy Anand
Kramnik
Ivanchuk
Carlsen
Leko
Gelfand
Jakovenko
Aronian
Morozevich (not confirmed)
10th player to be named (probably Radjabov)

http://previews.chessdom.com/tal-me...

Sep-15-09  chessarmenia: If either Radjabov or Topalov get the final spot, or even if they do not, this may well be considered a tournament to determine who is unofficially the best in the world, not considering ratings.
Sep-15-09  KamikazeAttack: <this may well be considered a tournament to determine who is unofficially the best in the world, not considering ratings.>

really? from just one tournament?

Sep-15-09  slomarko: Kramnik + Leko = tons of draws
Sep-15-09  chessarmenia: Well you're probably right that its difficult to judge from just one tournament, but I think this tournament is similar in strength to the 1994 Linares tournament in which Kasparov claimed the winner may as well consider themselves the world champion of chess: Game Collection: Linares 1994
Sep-15-09  slomarko: <in which Kasparov claimed the winner may as well consider themselves the world champion of chess> actually no, what Kasparov said is that the winner could be considered the world champion of tournament chess.
Sep-15-09  chessarmenia: Yes, you're right, I just misquoted him... but semantics aside, this tournament will be incredible if all players go in with something to prove, which is not unlikely. However, equally likely is that the players will play relatively safe considering the strength of the tournament, and be satisfied with 3 wins and no losses. But, considering this is a TAL MEMORIAL, maybe the players will be inspired to play fighting chess every round.(or I could just be wildly optimistic:)
Sep-15-09  Thuellin: The Chessdom list of 2009 participants contradicts the list that Svidler gave the other day on ChessFM:

"Anand, Aronian, Carlsen, Kramnik, Leko, Gelfand, Ivanchuk, Morozevich, Svidler, Ponomariov"

Svidler said he wasn't 100% sure about his list, but surely he'd know whether or not he was invited and attending! I don't think he'd lie.

Damn it!

They violated the <KRAMNIK-LEKO-SVIDLER PICK ONLY ONE> rule.

Sep-16-09  Thuellin: Looks like Svidler was correct:

Ponomariov and Svidler are in and Jakovenko out.

suenteus po 147: Should be a great tournament, since you've got Aronian, Carlsen, Ivanchuk, Morozevich, and Ponomariov as dynamic players to counter balance the solid (many will say "drawish") play of Anand, Gelfand, Kramnik, Leko, and Svidler. Ought to be some gems in the games played at this event.
Sep-16-09  returnoftheking: Is Ponomariov known as a "dynamic player" ?
Sep-16-09  returnoftheking: And Svidler; I don't think him "undynamic" ;)
