Anand vs Kramnik, 2008
Bonn, Germany

After Viswanathan Anand's victory in the 2007 World Championship Tournament, preparations were made to stage a title contest with former champion Vladimir Kramnik to be held in Bonn, Germany.

This match was a one-off event in which the previous world champion (Vladimir Kramnik) has been given the right to challenge to regain his title. Its origin lies in the complications of re-unifying the world title in 2006.1

This event is especially significant because Anand did not win the 2007 FIDE World Championship in the traditional manner, by defeating the standing champion in a head-to-head match, but instead by winning a tournament. By winning this match, Anand cemented the legitimacy of his World Championship status beyond reproach.

The match format was a best of 12 games. In the event that the 12 games end in a 6-6 tie, the match is decided by a short series of rapid games, then blitz (if necessary), and finally, if needed, a single decisive "Armageddon game."2

In the game 3, Anand scored a stunning victory from the black side of the Meran variation of the Semi-Slav Defense, giving him the lead. In game 5 the same variation was tested again, and once more Anand triumphed with the black pieces. Anand then won the 6th game (playing White against the Nimzo-Indian Defense) giving him a commanding three point lead in the first half of the match. Kramnik scored his first victory in game 10, but Anand needed only one draw in the remaining two games to secure victory.

After a draw in the 11th game, Viswanathan Anand defended his title and became the undisputed 15th World Chess Champion.

Oct-19-08  danielpi: <angslo> Many thanks.

<JFQ> used to be more pleasant -- when she was first on this site, and she genuinely wanted to learn about chess and stuff. 20,000 posts later, it seems like she feels that she owns the place. And she floods every forum she visits with this inane, pretentious garbage -- clumsy and inappropriate literary references, dubious puns, and pseudo-erudite non sequiturs. Oh, the non sequiturs.

Here's what they have in common -- these sad little folk. More than attention, they crave respect. <slomarko> wants his opinion to matter. That's why he foists it on people that don't care what he has to say -- it's why he assaults people who have expressed open contempt for him. He doesn't want to win the argument, so much as he wants to feel appreciated, and the dumb lug keeps bashing his head against a brick wall, trying to get that appreciation. Talk about a guy with no social skills.

<JFQ>, on the other hand, is after more than raw attention and respect. She specifically wants people to think of her as intelligent and sophisticated. To that end, every post she writes oozes with a sort of false bravado. One can only speculate what childhood trauma inspired her to such ostentation. Frankly, I find it less interesting to burst her bubble, as her particular brand of phoniness strikes me as more embarrassing and self-destructive than annoying. Anyway, she tends to leave me alone for months at a time, so I rarely feel any need to address her.

<slomarko>, on the other hand, I rather enjoy pummelling. And I never seek the guy out. He keeps coming back to me. There are better things I could be doing, but it's actually sort of cathartic to smash him from time to time. I don't feel my time is wasted. If the thought didn't creep me out so much, I'd say he had a crush on me. *shudder*

Oct-19-08  angslo: <danielpi: <angslo> Many thanks.>

<danielpi>, you are welcome :)

Oct-19-08  Pyke: <Danielpi> So you don't like <Slomarko> and <JessicaFischerQueen>? Well, fair enough, your opinion.

But what I don't get is: Why don't you simply put them on ignore and get on with it? Why keep ranting on and trying to impose your views on them on others?

There are people here that actually like these two. What's wrong with that.

So PLEASE: Put them on ignore if you like and please get over it!

Oct-19-08  chebuilder: Danielpi with all due respect. It really appears that you are full of nasty words against these folk (and i don't know anyone here in this forum so i'm completely neutral). It's really not justified over some simple sqibbles around the semantics of different openings. I'm just coming here to check out some cool discussion about the world championship. I can say that the length and frequency of your unnecessary vindictive comments are really spoiling this website. It has led me to search out other websites to watch and chat about chess. it's horse p00. Can you please just let everyone enjoy discussion about the world championship? seriously, learn to just keep your trap shut, it's a skill we all need to learn from time to time. Sincerely, andrew.

dumb lug??? now that is wickid lol

Oct-19-08  chebuilder: danielpi, i seriously think you are an intelligent, but bored soul. I mean, it's clear you are spending too much time overanalysing all this. You think those other users really need to use another account as a proxy??? you are way over complicating things. This is a chess discussion forum, period. If you enjoy this banter, fine, for me i have better things to do. I'm going to enjoy playing more chess and forget this forum. Good luck to you pal :)

rogge: <You think those other users really need to use another account as a proxy???>

We know that for a fact.

Oct-19-08  chebuilder: <rogge> Well then this place really is for children. Seriously (shaking head) this is lame.
Oct-19-08  danielpi: <chebuilder><i seriously think you are an intelligent, but bored soul.>

Right. Don't patronize me. I don't need you to tell me I'm "intelligent". So, let's be clear on this: you're claiming that you're just some random guy, who creates an account for the sole purpose of razzing me, and you stick around long enough to tell me that you're not a sock puppet. That's it. And now you're going off to greener pastures? Am I getting this right? This is your claim? Well, I <seriously> think that you're a sock puppet. Seriously.

Hah. When the opposition needs to resort to crap like this, it's a pretty clear sign who's in the right. You know, the temptation to create a sockpuppet account has never crossed my mind. Or to use clever sobriquet. My username is my real name. I am who I am. No sock puppets. No fakery. Whether you like what I've got to say or not, at least I'm upfront and honest. I don't claim to be anything more than I am. And I'm happy to be who I am -- warts and all. Well, I don't have any warts, but if I did, I'd be proud of 'em, too.

You might want to take a mighty hard look in that mirror <JFQ> or <slo> or whoever you are. I couldn't care less about your vain little attempts at cheapos. But you ought to care. Perhaps you ought to take a deep think about the direction of your life, when you feel the need to create fake accounts on a chess website to raz a guy -- to make it seem like you have defenders that you don't really have. Lonely world from where you're sitting, ain't it?

O'Reilly sucks. And I poop on you for suggesting any resemblance. :P

Meatwad: Magic solution: I put slomarko, jessicafischerqueen and woodywoodpusher all on my ignore list, and now amazingly the games I'm watching are filled almost exclusively with intelligent commentary! I realize there might still be monkeys flinging dung out there, but if you can't hear them do they really exist?
Oct-19-08  minasina: <hovik2003: So much talk about Sicilians, I hope the Godfather himself take care of you guys in Sicilian style.>

A good one :)

Oct-19-08  danielpi: <Meatwad>

When you turn your back on a dung-flinging monkey, it doesn't disappear. You just end up having feces on your back and not realizing it.

In fairness, at some point, I may just get bored and put them on the ignore list. For the moment, I'm having fun bashing them, when they muster up the courage to hurl their metaphorical feces at me.

Oct-19-08  Woody Wood Pusher: I love the way <meatwad> has posted only 5 times, and me being on his ignore list is the subject of one of them. He really must be such an interesting guy, I am so disappointed.

Oct-19-08  danielpi: <Woody>

Didn't mean to include you in *my* list of dung flinging monkeys. Perhaps if I'd met you on the Kramnik forum first -- but as it is, we had a pretty reasonable discussion on the Karpov page. So far as I'm concerned, you're all right. Misguided, but all right.

Oct-19-08  slomarko: danielpi your long rants are boring like hell
Oct-19-08  danielpi: <slo> makes his ignoble return! Have you come back to admit you were wrong about the other three points as well?
Oct-19-08  slomarko: <Have you come back to admit you were wrong about the other three points as well?> nope i'm still waiting you show some top level games in the reversed closed sicilian.
Oct-19-08  Woody Wood Pusher: <dan> I seem to remember you are a Karpov fan, I got a great book about him recently actually, erm, 'Endgame Virtuoso Anatoly Karpov by Tibor Karolyi & Nick Aplin', I can't recommend it enough for fans of the 12th World Champion.

As for me being <misguided>, your opinion is duly noted. But forgive me if I turn down the offer to a lengthy exchange of mutual character undermining.

Oct-19-08  danielpi: <slo><nope i'm still waiting you show some top level games in the reversed closed sicilian.>

Go back -- I posted five. I'd be happy to post as many as you would like.

<Woody> I have the book. It may be my favorite chess book, actually. I was under the impression that Karolyi did the chess work and Alpin or whatever did the translating. Perhaps I'm mistaken.

As for the other thing -- it's not an issue of character. I just think you will come around and realize the immense charm of Kramnik's games someday. That's all I meant by "misguided".

Oct-19-08  slomarko: <I just think you will come around and realize the immense charm of Kramnik's games someday.> yup there is nothing like a Petroff or a Berlin.
Oct-19-08  wordcraft: I wish he'd show more bite with black. He's toothless with black.
