amadeus: Well, one can't blame Milov for trying... Congrats to Svidler!
Feb-05-09  malthrope: <acirce: Time to congratulate Svidler very soon.>

Indeed! <amadeus> was right - Congrats Svidler! :))

Feb-05-09  DCP23: <malthrope> lol!

<moronovich: Best quess : soon it will be ½-½ offered by Svidler in a superior pos.>

Good guess, but Svidler actually won the second game too, for 2-0.

Marmot PFL: Svidler always seemed like a very good guy, for a GM.
Feb-05-09  dumbgai: I thought Milov could have tried a more aggressive opening in the second tiebreak game. From a worse position he tried attacking in the center and it didn't work at all.
Feb-05-09  paavoh: " ... a hot knife through butter.." It looked exactly like that - Svidler proved to be a monster in rapid/blitz - again!

PhilFeeley: Krush just won a marathon r&p vs. r ending. Nice little tactic at the end. I have no idea what it's called.

Feb-05-09  manchild: Svidler is Raffael. Of course he's strong in fast time controls.
Feb-06-09  anandrulez: <Marmot PFL: Svidler always seemed like a very good guy, for a GM.> Yes he is a nice guy..straight forward and friendly ...

Feb-06-09  Eurotrash: Time to present the final standings, methinks.
Feb-06-09  kramputz: <"Chess Games">:
Whem will you post the final results ???

PhilFeeley: <kramputz: When will you post the final results ???> Maybe when the official site posts them itself. They only give the results of the final round, not the final table.
Feb-06-09  Shajmaty: <Eurotrash: Time to present the final standings, methinks.>

After round 10:
1 GM Svidler, Peter 8.0
2 GM Milov, Vadim 8.0
3 GM Gashimov, Vugar 7.5
4 GM Nakamura, Hikaru 7.5
5 GM Berg, Emanuel 7.5
6 GM Akobian, Varuzhan 7.5
7 GM Harikrishna, Pentala 7.0
8 GM Dzagnidze, Nana w 7.0
9 GM Sokolov, Ivan 7.0
10 GM Stefanova, Antoaneta w 7.0
11 GM Cramling, Pia w 7.0

Svidler then beat Milov 2-0 at the tiebreaks. Congratulations, Pete!

PhilFeeley: <Shajmaty> Thanks for these. Susan Polgar's blog has a larger list, if anyone's interested. Still nothing on the official site.
Feb-06-09  Nezhmetdinov: Svidler scored heavily here because against players not quite at the very top level his superb understanding of, and ability to evaluate correctly, each position was quite enough, thank you.
Feb-06-09  eternaloptimist: I admire Nakamura, Krush, D'Costa (even though I'm not familiar w/ him) & Zatonskih for playing fighting chess in this age of wimpy GM draws. All of them only got 1 draw a piece! Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying u should be foolish about it & keep trying to win the game when it would be too risky. I'm just saying a lot of GMs agree to draws when there is still a lot of life left in the game. It looks like Krush did better last year than this year, but she still did well this year. Last year she beat Akopian & Korchnoi & almost got a GM norm. She has 1 norm now & is a IM. Akopian is a 2700+ player, so I don't need to elaborate on that anymore. She played her usual fighting chess in her win against Sandipan this year...great game on her part. It's also good to see that the former World Championship candidate (in the late '80s) Speelman is still hangin' w/ the big boys! He only got 1 loss!
Feb-07-09  Pianoplayer: Nakamura with a respectful 3rd place.
Feb-07-09  eternaloptimist: Edit: Actually, I need to correct myself. That's what Krush did in 2007, not last year. I just pulled out an April 2007 copy of "Chess Life" magazine to verify it, & I guess I should have been more specific about which Akopian/Akobian (2 ways to spell their last names) she beat. I should have said VLADIMIR Akopian because there is also a Varuzhan Akobian. Vlad Akopian won it in 2007. Gibraltar is a cool place. I went on a missionary trip to that area back in '98 & checked Gibraltar out on 1 of my off days. Warning: (if any of u guys go over there 1 day) If any of the Barbary apes wants your food, u better give it to him/her/them. As long as u do this you should be alright. It's the only place in Europe where they exist, & they let them run wild.
Feb-07-09  karoaper: Not too shabby for my man Akobian and Berg, being up there with the 700 boys.
Feb-08-09  Bobsterman3000: Nice result for Pia Cramling !!
Feb-13-09  midnightsun88: Svidler spoiled Naka's hopes in this tournament
Mar-08-09  WhiteRook48: Great for Svidler!
