| | eternaloptimist: I admire Nakamura, Krush, D'Costa (even though I'm not familiar w/ him) & Zatonskih for playing fighting chess in this age of wimpy GM draws. All of them only got 1 draw a piece! Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying u should be foolish about it & keep trying to win the game when it would be too risky. I'm just saying a lot of GMs agree to draws when there is still a lot of life left in the game. It looks like Krush did better last year than this year, but she still did well this year. Last year she beat Akopian & Korchnoi & almost got a GM norm. She has 1 norm now & is a IM. Akopian is a 2700+ player, so I don't need to elaborate on that anymore. She played her usual fighting chess in her win against Sandipan this year...great game on her part. It's also good to see that the former World Championship candidate (in the late '80s) Speelman is still hangin' w/ the big boys! He only got 1 loss! |

I just pulled out an April 2007 copy of "Chess Life" magazine to verify it, & I guess I should have been more specific about which Akopian/Akobian (2 ways to spell their last names) she beat. I should have said VLADIMIR Akopian because there is also a Varuzhan Akobian. Vlad Akopian won it in 2007. Gibraltar is a cool place. I went on a missionary trip to that area back in '98 & checked Gibraltar out on 1 of my off days. Warning: (if any of u guys go over there 1 day) If any of the Barbary apes wants your food, u better give it to him/her/them. As long as u do this you should be alright. It's the only place in Europe where they exist, & they let them run wild. |
