Feb-14-09  MJW 72: Due to the extreme shortness of the match anyone can win it. A player could get lucky and have the other player play into one of a handfull former player's TNs.
Feb-14-09  Confuse: The absolute worst response to 1. e4 is (and please forgive my language, sensitive viewers), for the one facing e4 to lose the will to live, and whenever he sees a chessboard for the next 10 years he cowers in fear at the possibility of 1. e4, where he finally loses his mind and commits suicide when he accidentally sees a chessboard with the 1. e4 position played out. Then for that person to reside in hell, suffering for all eternity...forced to see only chessboards with 1.e4 played out, with little voices whispering always... "your move..."
Feb-14-09  laskersteinitz: <Confuse: The absolute worst response to 1. e4 is (and please forgive my language, sensitive viewers),> So what is it? You didn't say!
Feb-14-09  siamesedream: Topalov will crush Kamsky. Gata won't win any game. maybe draw 1 or 2.
Feb-14-09  utssb: <SetNoEscapeOn: 4-4. Kamsky in rapid.>

I don't know how you arrived at that prediction. It's possible but Topalov is clearly the superior player. To even handicap this match at 50% would be generous towards Kamsky.

Feb-14-09  shr0pshire: I am rooting for Kamsky. Gotta come out swinging!

(Topalov in New In Chess 2009/1 after winning Nanjing)

Well, let's see if he can live up to that. If he is so much better, it should weigh up for the disadvantage of having to play in Bulgaria...

  rogge: <It's not a feeling, it's reality>

What a contrast to Anand, who would never make a pompous remark like that.

Feb-14-09  nhat8121: umm, in fact, it is reality!
Feb-14-09  arnaud1959: What would you expect him to say? Maybe: "On paper I'm number one but in the reality I feel that I must prove it"?? He is simply not the type of person who gives answers that you can stretch in any direction.
Feb-14-09  anandrulez: Topalov is on the face sorta guy .... He thinks he is numero uno and I think he has rights to claim that since he has played the best chess for some time now ...
Feb-14-09  eisenherz: To play the match during Linares is also stupid

rogge: Something like <still, Anand is the World Champion> wouldn't hurt his case.

The question wasn't about being #1 ratingwise, but about being <the best>, as I read it.

Topa and Anand probably are the two top players at the moment. Anyways, that's something we'll know more about in a couple of weeks.

Feb-14-09  Raginmund: WHY ON EARTH???
why on earth I can't find at internet nothing about Kamsky's point of view about the match???

they always say about Topalov, danailov, chepa... and, where's kamsky??

someone could post a link to some article or interview about Kamsky???

Feb-14-09  Augalv: <arnaud1959: What would you expect him to say? Maybe: "On paper I'm number one but in the reality I feel that I must prove it"??>

Of course he has to prove it. He is not the world champion. Being the highest rated player doesn't necessarily mean he is the best.

< ray keene: thanks for referring me to <agent b>-i have done my own calculations and published them-my conclusion was very similar to that of <agent b>-namely a match for the world title shd consist of no fewer than 16 games ! >
Feb-14-09  Augalv: <a match for the world title shd consist of no fewer than 16 games ! >

I say 18 games, minimum.

Feb-14-09  MeatGrinder: <- Do you have the feeling after Bilbao and this tournament and with this rating that you are the number one at this moment?

Topalov is just stating the obvious, that <with this rating> he is indeed <the number one> player in the rankings. If the question was worded differently for example "Do you feel you are the strongest player at the moment?" I'm sure he would have answered differently, probably mentioning Anand.

Feb-14-09  AnalyzeThis: <Bobsterman3000: When Kamsky first qualified I thought he had great chances against Topalov. But his overal play in middle and late 2008 have given me serious doubts about his ability to compete with Topalov, especially in a match taking place in Bulgaria... >

Reluctantly, I have to agree. But, they still have to play the games. Kamsky needs a break early to take an early lead, develop confidence, and put pressure on Topalov.

Open Defence: a Topalov - Anand match might have more commercial interest than a Kamsky-Anand match perhaps
Feb-14-09  arnaud1959: <Augalv> My point is that the question itself is meaningless. It could be asked to a player who is doing very well lately but who is not number one or wc yet. Asking this question to Topalov is the same thing as asking to Obama if he feels that he's president of US.
Feb-14-09  dumbgai: <Chessgames> The chess bookie prop for this event doesn't include all possible scores. 5-2 and 5-3 for either player are possible, for example if Kamsky leads 4-2 after six games and wins game 7, the final match score is 5-2. I think these should be added, or at least an "Other score" option.

Feb-14-09  arnaud1959: <kramputz> Topalov or Obama. They are what they are officially. You may like it or not. You may even be right.

In some days Topalov may lose the "number one" title. Then we can ask him if he "feels" that he is still number one and laugh at him if he answers "it's the reality".
