Shams: You guys shouldn't give away the final move, there's a puzzle to be had. Thanks for flagging this lovely miniature. White played the fashionable 5.Nc3 line (Nimzo?) against the Russian defense. But he played too slowly while Xiangzhi, black, castled long and came at him early. After 16.Kb1 we have:

and black busted out with 16...d5!! Of course 17.cd Bxd5 and now if 18.Qxe7 black mates in five in a sequence much easier to find now that we know the penultimate move. ;)

Jun-02-09  Drunken king: rgr459, dumbgai:

I don´t think is like Jī Dàn (Ji1 dan4) which as you say means chicken egg, I haven´t checked but his name is surely written with another chinese characters.

Jun-02-09  gazzawhite: <gmhwanaby: correct, not a top player but the best player in china today.>

Um, contradiction much?

Jun-02-09  gazzawhite: Oh wow they actually changed the description, now it says "12 of the strongest players in China." I have to say that is pretty cool that they altered it to make it more accurate. Thanks chessgames!
Jun-02-09  supertimchan: Wang Hao is having like 2900 performance, this is crazy.
Jun-02-09  arman07: Yeah.he wl lost 2day against bu xiangxhi. .dat wang hao

Wild Bill: Does anybody know what happened to our young lady tonight?

A big fat 1-0 went up at game time.

Jun-03-09  Ladolcevita: <WangYue is playing somewhere else> <HouYifan was late for 5 seconds!...so,she lost by rule..,virtually her opponent today is comparatively weaker...She could have grasped this opportunity to gain some points....>
Jun-03-09  Ladolcevita: <btw>Guxiaogbing arrived 5 seconds earlier,whoo...==what the deuce...

Wild Bill: Ouch. Doesn't sound like they cut any slack, does it?

Thanks, <Ladolcevita>.

Jun-03-09  Ladolcevita: <yes!!>And this game was held in Hou and Guxiaobing's hometown......I cant believe this is just happening....someone who had made this rule must be really insane! Its not like 5minutes or half an hour that it is on purpose or somehow...and after all,we know that the time expense has always been counted into the board time,so whats the big deal to take one's time as freely as she pleases?
Jun-03-09  gmhwanaby: oh my, top board already a drawn game!!
Jun-03-09  blueofnoon: Well it is FIDE which decided that a player should be present in time or he/she will be forfieted...

The Chinese Chess Federation is just following this rule, so we really cannot blame them.

Jun-03-09  gmhwanaby: Indeed, rule is a rule.

One more thing, Chess is a gentleman's game. The best way to show such is by showing respect to one's opponent. And this will be done by not letting him wait, its very ungentlemanly manners. Ironically, HOU Yifan is not a man ... lol.

  Wild Bill: <gmhwanaby:>

As long as it is a rule, yes, it should be enforced as it is. However, Ladolcevita and I are simply wondering if the rule couldn't be written better. I, for one, would feel guilty taking a victory because my opponent was five seconds late.

Jun-03-09  dumbgai: Hehe, I know it isn't chicken egg but it's still funny.

The new rule for automatic forfeit is ridiculous. There have been times when I was one or two minutes late to a game for reasons beyond my control. For example, in Las Vegas the hotel elevator malfunctioned. At least let the player's clock run for ten minutes before declaring a forfeit.

al wazir: There's something funny here. Ji's highest rating in the database is 2297, and Ding doesn't have one. Everyone else is a GM.

Agreed. I thought a player had an hour to show up (as used by Fischer many years ago against Reshevsky) before being forfeited. Five seconds is unconscionable. I'm a club player, but I've been in two tournaments where the boards were marked ambiguously. I arrived at "the board" on time only to lose time off my clock because it was the wrong board!

Jun-04-09  Riverbeast: Wow, Wang Hao is tearing through this tournament, it looks like he's 'the man' in Chinese chess these days (pun intended)

Or should I say, 'the elephant'?

I wonder why Wang Yue isn't playing?
