| Jul-25-09 | | zluria: I've been following this tournament for the last 3 rounds. Here's an interesting fact: The Postny game is always the last to finish. He's a fighter! In Yesterday's game, for example, I was sure that he was totally lost against Negi, but he managed to save it somehow... The day before that it was a totally drawn Bishop endgame against Sargissian, which he played on for another 50 moves before sacrificing his Bishop for another drawn endgame. |

Several years ago, perhaps as many as 7 or 8, ESPN did a special on Maurice Ashley and what it is like to be a chess player. Towards the end of it, Maurice plays blitz with a young kid with dreadlocks. He lauds Kasa's abilities and predicts that he will be a future "champion" (although of course Maurice showed no mercy in the actual games). So it is absolutely great to see the young man making master at 15. If he so chooses, he still has many years to improve his chess and aim for higher titles. |

| Jul-27-09 | | Troller: A pity for Malakhov, he looked a solid winner of the tournament until last round. But that's a Swiss tournament for you, and Malakhov has won it before. Impressive display by Negi on the other hand. Maybe he is ready for another jump on the elo list - expectations are certainly there. Hillarp-Persson only scored ½/3 in the last three rounds to finish way down the table, but he got the brilliancy prize for this:

| Jul-27-09 | | Troller: Bent Larsen was not in Denmark as far as I know during this tournament, and he certainly did not compete. There were different other Larsens competing though, it's a common name in Denmark. I actually happen to have a neighbour named "Bent Larsen" around the same age as the chessplayer (but then there are 868 people named "Bent Larsen" in Denmark according to the statistical bureau). Some other names have been corrupted as well:
Jen Kristiansen should be Jens Kristiansen, and the hilarious Mad Andersen is of course Mads Andersen, although it is a great name. |
