| Jul-30-09 | | Ezzy: Top 2 seeds play in the 4th round today - Gawain Jones v David Howell. Both on maximum points (3), but only by the skin of their teeth, as they both were losing their games in the second round. Hebden missed a winning move against Howell. So it seems the leaders are beatable. Jones and Howell have played twice in 2002 and 2005 when both games were drawn. Today I predict a fight to the death. Is this a first for a chess event? :-)
Round 3 Opening Chaos:
Heavy rain was forecast for the afternoon, and sure enough it arrived in time to drench those coming in for the start of afternoon play. It built to a tropical intensity until at 2 p.m. some little monkey on the gallery (no one knows who - yet) pressed the fire alarm button to see what would happen. Well, two things happened - speakers all around the building ordered everyone outside immediately and the windows in the roof opened automatically to let out the smoke. There was no smoke to go out, of course, but an awful lot of rain to come in. Within minutes the boards, tables and floor beneath each window were soaked and the start was delayed by 15 minutes while Centre staff worked wonders, mopping up and changing wet chairs and cloths. Both won, but the 22.Qxf7+ line was long and dangerous with opportunities for white to go wrong. I won't bore you with details, but one line was 22.Qxf7+ Kd8 23.Nxb7+ Kc7 24.Rxd7+ Kb6! (not 24...Nxd7 when 25.Qxd7+ wins quickly) 25.Nxc5 Qxb5 26.Qxe6+ Ka5 27.Qxe5 Rhc8 28.Qe1+ and wins. But black gets a lot of optical counterplay, even if white holds the balance in actuality. I agree that it was a great game -- I was riveted to it. The key was the brilliant 17.e5!! -- the combination, including the rook sac on a1, doesn't work unless the a1/h8 diagonal is blocked to keep the black queen from returning. After 17.e5 black should probably try ...h5 to keep the white queen out, though he's clearly much worse. |

However, Williams and Hebden shared 2nd place with 8.5/11, which would have been good enough for 1st place in many previous years. This was a great result for Williams, who beat Hebden, Jones, and Gordon, and drew with Howell, and also for Hebden, who lost to Howell and Williams, but was extremely efficient against the rest. |
