zarg: Yes it looks like Leko today blew away his chances at the second GP Candidates spot. Radja's biggest challenge now, is from Wang Yue and Gashimov.

tamar: The pressure will be on Kasparov to beat him in less than 17 moves!

whiteshark: It's already over? Damned, I missed the last round. :(
Aug-23-09  Bobsterman3000: The last time Kasparov and Karpov played a rapid match it wasn't Kasparov who won :-)

That was their 25-10 match, I think it was in 2002...

virginmind: hug werner 2.5 points equal with karpov and polgar - not bad, all things considered...

yes, bravo for gelfand also.

Aug-23-09  smaragdus: Congratulations to Ivanchuk for his great performance at Jermuk, the most beautiful among the host towns of the grand prix series. Well done, Ivanchuk, go win the last one too and secure a place among the candidates.
Aug-23-09  Illogic: <ksr> How old are you?
Aug-23-09  messachess: Great tournament. Congratulations to Ivanchuk!

notyetagm: <percyblakeney: The last round was a huge blow to Leko's chances to get a spot in the Candidates, 100 points instead of the possible 180.>

But Leko always chokes anyway, so what's the point? Giving yet *another* high-peofile event to choke in?

notyetagm: FIDE Jermuk Grand Prix (2009)/Vassily Ivanchuk

Ivanchuk was the only undefeated player, <+4 =9 -0>. In contrast, Aronian lost twice.

Chucky is back!

YES!

Aug-23-09  ceebo: So that makes Aronian the outright winner of the GP series.

He has only dropped 40 points in his three tournaments so far, whereas everyone else has dropped more than that many in their best two.

SetNoEscapeOn: Yet another awesome effort by Aronian, but he cannot catch Ivanchuk. Very nice little move 35. Bd6! snatching a pawn. That's one for <notyetagm>.
Aug-23-09  ceebo: <smaragdus: Well done, Ivanchuk, go win the last one too and secure a place among the candidates>

If Ivanchuck wins the last GP outright then I reckon he qualifies for the candidates unless Radjabov finishes in 2nd place or sole 3rd place.

(actually, if Radjabov finishes in a 5-or-more way tie for 2nd Ivanchuck qualifies then too)

Aug-23-09  The Rocket: "If Ivanchuck wins the last GP outright then I reckon he qualifies for the candidates unless Radjabov finishes in 2nd place or sole 3rd place."

well whats the name of the last gp?

if kramnik and carlsen is in it maybe a win for ivanchuk is not very likely(though of course still possible)

Aug-23-09  ceebo: <well whats the name of the last gp?>

Got no idea. Guess i'm just being theoretical at the moment! ;)

Not sure what you mean. If Kramnik or Carlsen qualify for the "candidates event", it would be by rating, organizer's choice, or the world cup (according to the latest rules, at least, things will probably change again). They cannot influence Ivanchuk's chances in the Grand Prix.

Aug-23-09  The Rocket: well didnt you guys say he had to win the last gp outright to qualify? and I meant that with kramnik and carlsen in the tournament this is harder to do.
